Allegations is the main word that stands out to me. The abuse allegations aren't against Meyer. Was he supposed to just fire someone over allegations? That's a very slippery slope. Any scorn female can claim anything. I only read a couple articles. Neither gave many details at all.
For the record. I'm a Buckeye hater.

One part that stands out to me is that Urban Liars wife is a nurse and instructor at OSU. If she knew of the abuse then she could land in some very hot water too.

Women have been staying in abusive relationships since the beginning of relationships.
To a lesser extent, so have men.

bottom line one of his coaches was abusing his wife, according to the reporter with the txt messages, meyer knew about it and kept him on the staff and lied about it. if thats the case no way tOSU can keep him. only way out is if those txt messages arent real, which, considering the dude posted pics, it looks like church. my guess he is gone inside a week.

Yeah I heard a bit on this one on the radio this AM during my short commute that Meyer's wife and the coach's wife being abused are good friends to the point she texted her pics of her bruises from the abuse. No way Meyer did not know about this...he is most likely toast.

OSU fans are maniacs and they will be madder than a Baylor alum defending him, NO MATTER WHAT. They really do not care if Meyer murdered someone personally. They will defend him t the end.
Meyer knew. Why he went out on a limb for this guy is crazy. He had to know that this was going to be on him if anyone found out. He makes a billion dollars so why didn't he just give in 500k and tell him to find another job? makes no sense.

not a fan of Urban Meyer nor am I trying to defend beating up your wife but firing the guys boss over it doesn't seem justified to me...
my reasoning is based on urban meyer as head coach at Ohio State is an extremely demanding job that has probably a couple hundred people including players reporting to him.....a man in that position has to prioritize, delegate and certainly can't get involved in the personal relationships his employees may have....plus there is always two sides to every story....

Joe Paterno got crucified and his reputation ruined in a similar situation in which he may have known a little about a problem but it was nowhere near top priority where you are trying to produce a winning football team just like Urban Meyer is...

So...if Meyer is fired what's OSU's record this year?
In 2011, after Tressel was fired, they went 6-7 after finishing 12-1 the previous season.
I say they go 9-4.

The guy worked DIRECTLY for Meyer. He beat his wife/gf. Meyer knew. Meyers wife tried to squash it. So the fish stinks from the head down. When the wife of a coach is calling the cops on YOUR guy for beating her, that moves UP my priority list to #1A.

Re: Uh ohhh Ohio State..... - 08/02/18 02:51 PM

So, if I am a high end manager at a major corporation and one of my reports is rumored to be doing something illegal but there have been no convictions against him I am expected to fire him or lose my own job? There would be lawsuits on both parts because it would be illegal to have fired him on rumors. What makes college football any different.

I am not defending that DV is okay.

Corporations don't fall under Title IX. If you are an employee of an an Educational Institution you by law have to report any allegation of physical or sexual abuse so it can be investigated. In this case it was not reported. Same thing if a teacher suspects abuse of a student she has to report it or he/she will lose their job.

My understanding since the assistant coach is an employee of Ohio State and Meyers and his wife are employees of Ohio State. From Espn

"Meyer's contract extension signed in April includes language requiring him to report any violations by staff members of Ohio State's sexual misconduct policy to the university's athletics Title IX coordinator. Also, as an Ohio State employee who supervises others, Meyer is required by the university's sexual misconduct policy to report knowledge of domestic abuse by a university employee. According to the policy, "An individual need not be charged with or convicted of a criminal offense to be found responsible for domestic violence pursuant to this policy."

Meyer's original contract required him to promptly report any violations of university rules by assistant coaches to Gene Smith and the Office of Compliance Services. Failure to do so could result in termination with cause.

Meyer's contract states that if Ohio State is considering terminating with cause, he has the right to "explain the circumstances with his point of view before termination, unless the circumstances are so heinous that, in Ohio State's reasonable judgment, it would be impossible for [Meyer] to justify his actions"

Yes, I knew that as my wife works in the education system.

I guess I should have typed - 'If it is a rumor and has been investigated by the Law Enforcement entities but no charges have been filed, why would I be subject to lose my job as a college coach?' I could see it if me and my coach and our wives were out on the town and I witnessed it first hand and failed to report it then so be it but I don't believe that this is the case.

The way I read it was Meyers Obligation to report any allegations so it can be investigated to determine if it is true or false.

common sense, which is sorely lacking among many of our educators, would tell you if the police have investigated and found no grounds to proceed further,it would be idiotic and inviting a lawsuit to fire or punish an employee for something a bunch of wives are texting back and forth...what would the consequences be if the wife was exaggerating or lying about the abuses and you fired the guy and ruined his career?...
I can tell you the answer to that.....the head coach would lose his job, probably most of his money settling a lawsuit plus have a ruined career also...

I think they did the right thing, they just put him on leave until they get them before a judge. If they found out any of what has already been accused is true they will fire him.

If Tressel got fired for a few players exchanging some game jerseys for tattoos; things aren't looking good for Meyer.

If the police were notified by the abused person in 2015; what was the law enforcement action after that report?

You do realize that "for something a bunch of wives are texting back and forth" was about a man beating his wife?

You do realize that this man had the cops called to his home in two different states more than a half dozen times?

WOW!!!! Very open ended policy.

So my RB's coaches wife say he is an a--hat and is mean to her so I got to report it or risk my job and reputation. (Where is the BS Emoji?)

Hypothetical situation - I am the head coach for Michigan and am worried about being able to beat OSU so I hear a 'rumor' that UM yelled/ got aggressive with his wife or any other random person so I report it to the proper NCAA authorities so now he has to deal with that situation instead if beating Michigan.

The rule/contract says you have to report it. Im not saying I agree with Title IX or the way its written, but that seems to be pretty black and white. Meyer, just like Paterno, had a duty to report it.

This morning they were reporting that title 9 would not apply as the wife wasnt a member of faculty. Student, etc. Evidently there is case law on the books regarding this. The big issue is urban has been caught in an outright lie regarding subject matter that you really dont want to be in the middle of.

And I'm not a lawyer, I didnt stay in holiday inn, I'm merely puking up what the talking heads on the radio this morning were saying.

This is correct.

And for anyone who defends Urban Liar, needs to just remember who recruited, coached and turned a blind eye to Aaron Hernandez and his background.

I love college football and in No way I am condoning Domestic Violence, but I am not sure how men in charge are supposed to act in todays society. The coaches wife retroactively say something about her abuse, after the coach was already fired, and Urban Meyer is supposed to have fired the dude without a proper investigation in 2015?
If you want to see how screwy ESPN is getting, look at the amount of women writing stories about Meyer right now and what they are saying.
My guess is he is fired within the next week because the firestorm is too crazy.

I can't recall many high profile coaches coming back to work for that same team/school after being suspended. Especially in the times we currently live in where sexual harrassment and domestic abuse have started to garner a lot more attention.

I don't think he ever coaches another game at OSU.

AD, police, school president. I don't see him coaching at Ohio St again. All the coach's wives knew so that would probably mean all the coach's knew. I can only think of one coach that was put on leave and kept his job and that was MacIntyre at Colorado.

the university compliance office. if he does that when he learns of a potential abuse situation, he's clean because it becomes their process to run, he has no further obligation.

His contract spells out exactly what he's supposed to do in such a situation, and it further states that failure to report may result in dismissal with cause. However his contract also states that prior to dismissal, he gets a chance to present his side of the story for consideration.

I think you might be right Butch, I also think the powers that be at OSU know that Urban would have a high profile job the day he hit the bricks if he so desires. I could see him at Michigan or Notre Dame, Urban Meyer is the 2nd best coach in college ball. This isn't Jim Tressle or Art Briles.

Re: Uh ohhh Ohio State..... - 08/03/18 01:23 AM

I think this clause in Meyers contract could be a problem. Im no expert, but it does seem to place some culpability on Meyer. Whether it is enough to get him fired, no one knows.

New paragraph 4.1 (e) of Meyer's extension reads:

Coach shall promptly report to Ohio State's Title IX Athletics any known violations of Ohio State's Sexual Misconduct Policy (including, but not limited to, sexual harassment, sexual assault, sexual exploitation, intimate violence and stalking) that involve any student, faculty or staff or that is in connection with a university sponsored activity or event. ... For purposes of this Section 4.1 (e), a "known violation" shall mean a violation or allegation of a violation of Title IX that Coach is aware of or has reasonable cause is taking place or may have taken place.

Agree. Spousal abuse allegations, which are probably true. But nothing to do with students. Urban weathers this storm I think.

interesting read here. its lengthy, but outlines in some detail strong arguments for and against the applicability of T9.
regardless of t9, the university policy and his contract are pretty clear.
and ultimately the court of public opinion weighs just as heavy as the actual legal aspects when it comes to domestic abuse.

Not saying that's good or bad, right or wrong, but in the last few years we have seen a tremendous shift in how such matters are handled . . . see ray rice circa 2014 vs zeke 2017. Zeke's case was much murkier than rice, but he got the hammer.

I don't think they have any choice, in the current atmosphere, he has to go. They gave him a chance to come clean when he signed his contract extension. He was supposed to report anything he had any previous knowledge of about abuse or allegations of abuse. He knew about the 2009 offenses when the coach was arrested. His wife had texts about the 2015 incidents including pictures. They are searching for any way to keep him, but they will not and he will likely be out of football for a few years or longer. Joe Pa was much more beloved at his school than Meyer and they had no choice.

if urban gets fired over this, you can bet other high profile coaches are going to demand some changes are made in their contracts to keep them from being sucked into a situation over which he had no control and probably limited knowledge or information.......

Re: Uh ohhh Ohio State..... - 08/03/18 02:09 PM

So I have been pondering this, now the only thing that makes me happier than yankee big 10 schools having a mess is dumpster fires in Austin so if anything I'm all for the firing of Urban typically and I think he is a slime bag in general. That said and working under the idea that this is not a title 9 matter in my opinion I'll say this. It sounds like the marriage was an ongoing mess, it sounds like the wife was a goof also, in this day and age with police, sheriffs office, hotlines, countless groups she could go to, her parents, etc, etc her solution is to text urbans wife, why do that? I'm not condoning the domestic violence in whatever level it occurred, The mistake Urban made is not firing the guy sooner just for the couple being a mess. I'm betting this was the disaster couple that gets in fights at parties and public places and makes an area of themselves, drags everyone into their mess, I believe the wife said all the coaches wives knew, probably cause they act like idiots. I'm guessing Meyer is a major type a person who is probably pretty wrapped up in what he does for a living, I could easily see a scenario where his wife says that this couple is having problems again and depending on what was on his mind he blew it off as same old same old and moved on with whatever he was working on
I have a business partner that gets in a super focused mode and when in a certain mindset its gotta be something massive to get his attention or really even register and there is a good chance it wont be remembered depending on how deep in a project he is.

I agree on both accounts. The more I think about it, Meyers statement might have been an effort to implicate the higher ups at OSU. He says he did report it properly. That means, if thats true, he isnt going to be the patsy and others are going down with him. Not sure if it will work, but I think that was the purpose of the statement.

Re: Uh ohhh Ohio State..... - 08/04/18 06:52 PM

So I wonder with todays attitude, me too, sue happy society. How does OSU keep Meyers?
Yes there are a couple coaches out there. But with transfers coaching changes and then add the bad rep recruiting will fall off too.
Seeing what happened to other schools I personally do not believe OSU would want to fire him. They could lay any discipline on him and he would happily take it just to stay.

But do they fire him?
