Maybe someone here can help. - 06/20/18 11:24 PM

So my ac has gone out. I am told to change capacitor first. I was able to give the fan a push and it started running again but when I got home the whole unit was not working. I called Greinger this morning and they were able to find the capacitor no problem other than there were two different ones one was circle and one was oval. I wasn’t sure at the time what it was so I told them I’d call back this afternoon to order it after I found out. Well the four guys I’ve talked to this afternoon can’t seem to find it now. All I gave the guy this am was the model # from the unit and the voltage #s. Come on tff can y’all pull one out y’alls arse? There are no part numbers or voltage numbers on the capacitor.

I believe Home Depot and Lowe's both sell them... take that one in for a match up.

Inside the unit on the backside of the cover panels, is there a schematic diagram? If so, the cap voltage and rating should be on there. Clean that thing up with fantastic or something and look closer on it. It looks like a double cap, start and run perhaps. Did it have a wire on each terminal?

There was 3 wires one wire going to each terminal.

You'll still have to order. The Grainger in Arlington is better than the one in ft worth.

My question still stands? How do we know this is the correct one? Don’t we have to make sure some numbers that I don’t have match up?

Drodge, those capacitors are real cheap if you buy it right, like diamonds..
Little mom & pop shop on Division called ABCO appliance parts..
I bought a capacitor for under 30 bucks and that is high I was told.. I also bought a fan motor there when mine went out 80.00 bucks any one else wanted between 300-400 dollars to replace it. Took me 30 mins max..
Give them a call tomorrow or really just run it by the old guy will know what it is and I'd bet he has one on the spot..

Yes, should be able to find a replacement dual oval capacitor at around $30

The guy at grainger this morning said it was $17.99. But the other guys couldn’t find it when I called back to order it. I don’t know what’s going on.

That looks like a run/start cappy to me as well. Should be under $30. Hope you marked the wires or are good with a volt meter. Your start side is going to require a lot more energy (amp draw) then your run side.

Hope you get it up and running soon. Looks like 103 on Saturday.

Good luck Drodge. I got a free one yesterday because it was still under warranty.

That’s about the only time that has worked out in my favor.

Re: Maybe someone here can help. - 06/21/18 02:52 AM

the MF rating is all that matters
that is a dual start cap
I believe the 20/5 means 20 mf for compressor and 5 mf for fan
size and shape of the cap don't matter except to fit in he same spot.
many places won't sell it unless you are licensed. grainger is usually picky

Take it to Locke Supply in Bedford on the corner of Harwood and Brown Trail. They can match it and pricing is comparable to Amazon and should be in stock.

Good news guys! I know y’all were worried about me. We have now cooled down from 86 to 83. Slowly but surely. Grainger couldn’t get it until tomorrow so I stopped by Locke and they had one that would work. The one I had was 30-3 but they said a 30-5 would work. Thanks for yalls help. Most of y’all are good people.

Last time I replaced the capacitor in our AC unit I bought 2.

Yes, I remember where I stored the "spare".
