Re: Prostate Cancer - 06/18/18 09:22 PM

I do t have any words of advice but maybe some of comfort. My dad was diagnosed back in 2012. He had the surgery and they removed his entire prostate. The dr told me after the surgery that it was a lot worse than they thought. He had to go on some drugs for a while which he didn't care for, but he was able to live a mostly normal life. Today he is fine. Plays with his grandkids all the time and just goes in for visits to the doc every 6 months. It's the most common cancer in men, and also the most manageable.

Re: Prostate Cancer - 06/18/18 09:45 PM

My neighbor did the estrogen treatment, and it did work for him. He was only given a couple of years because his was metastasized, but the estrogen gave him almost 4 years. He did not want to go the traditional route because he was caring for his wife that had MS. This treatment, however, can put you at a higher risk for dementia.

The good news is, prostate cancer is usually not the cause of death for those that have it. More and more studies are being done internationally on treatments. Do your research. I'll say some prayers. I'm sorry you're going through this.

I have a neighbor that went this route. Short recovery time and no cancer returns so far. He is tested every 3 months and it has been a year since his surgery.

Re: Prostate Cancer - 06/18/18 11:00 PM

PH Prostate cancer is never good but you can still lead a normal life. Question: What is your Gleason score. If the cancer is not widespread and contained in the organ you might like to look at the the seed implants. Little side effects. I had radical prostatectomy 15 years ago. I had good surgeons that spared my nerves and have very few side effects the worst of which is scare tissue from the surgery.
If I had it to do over I would do the seed implants like a close friend did without complications. Don't panic and get good advice from more than one Doctor.

Dad got diagnosed in 2010 and went the seed implant route and has been good to go ever since. Good luck with what you decide to do a prayers up for healing.

Re: Prostate Cancer - 06/18/18 11:12 PM

Gleason score is 6. In the middle. More than half sites tested showed cancer...most were low percentages...but one was 95%.

I asked about seeds...doc said my prostate is too large for that. It in in excess of four times normal size.

Re: Prostate Cancer - 06/19/18 03:52 AM

MD Anderson or Mayo in Minnesota. My Anderson doc told me there are no secrets. They spread word to each other as soon as any new thing is proven. Docs at these places are true specialist. My guy is Dr Pisters (heck of a name for a urinary guy)in the Mays Clinic. He will tell you that his goal is to beat cancer. He does nothing but prostate and research. Spends a month every year in 3rd world countries teaching. Best of luck.

Re: Prostate Cancer - 06/19/18 05:49 PM

Finding any cancer in the early stages is always better. Prostate Ca in no different. A prostate needle Biopsy, serial PSA's and Gleason score tell the tale. Several options are available depending on stage and scores.

Re: Prostate Cancer - 06/20/18 12:25 AM

Diagnosed in 2011, caught it very early. My only symptom was elevated PSA of 5.6 (Nominal is 0 - 4). Had an additional test done 3 weeks later, and PSA was 6.2. Had the biopsy done; only 1 of 12 samples was positive, and that was just barely (~10% of that one sample). I think my Gleason score was 7. Prostate was slightly enlarged. I do remember it was classed as T2b: The tumor involves more than one-half of 1 side of the prostate but not both sides.
Went with focused radiation therapy (5 days/week for 9 weeks). PSA has remained between 2.5 and 3.0 ever since. Completed radiation in January 2012. I've led a pretty normal life since then, been able to stay as active as I was before.
I hope everything works out well for you, PH.

I'll keep you in my daily prayers, PH. You're a good one thumb If you decide to come to M.D. Anderson in Houston, you're welcome to stay with the wife and I. We have plenty of room and we're only about 15-20 mins from the med center.

Re: Prostate Cancer - 06/20/18 04:01 PM

I don’t think pot will help much at this point.

How old are you, PH?

I had robotic surgery to remove mine years ago and I wish I had gone with the pellets. Cancer free now but living with the side effects.

Since your gland is too big for pellet implant your options are limited. Good luck.

Re: Prostate Cancer - 06/20/18 08:00 PM

Dad had the robotic surgery....lived the rest of his life, 12 years, without any cancer issue....he didn't care for the main side affect

Re: Prostate Cancer - 06/20/18 08:33 PM

I was 50 at diagnosis in 2009. Did the robotic in Arlington and had a great outcome. The only side effect can be handled with drugs.

I am 71.

Fortunately, I am in the low risk category. I met with oncologist today. Think I am going with radiation....
