Many years ago I managed a men's clothing store that was adjacent to a private jewelry store. One of my customers, who was a dubious character at best, came in with a Haltom's Jewelry ring box holding what looked to be a 5 to 6 carat diamond ring set in gold. The ring had the Haltom's price tag to the tune of $25K plus still affixed. He said he knew the ring was probably stolen but at a price of $1000 could not pass up the opportunity of buying it and then reselling it but he was going to take the ring next door and have it appraised. He did not come back in after the appraisal but the next day I was talking the owner of the jewelry store who told me the story of a guy coming in to have his "Grandmothers" diamond ring appraised hoping to sell it to buy a new car. Said he hated to break the news to the guy that the ring was glass and the gold was cheap metal of some kind. He said the guy looked like he had just told him he had Herpes.

I had a room mate in grad school that fell for multiple sad story scams. He gave money to multiple people to get new car batteries so they could visit their dying mothers, grandmothers, girlfriends with cancer, etc. He was a walking ATM machine for the DC area hustlers.

Not by the speaker salesmen, now the last time I got out of the house with one of my buddies we went to the bar and played pool. We were playing pretty good, having a good time, and these 2 guys walk up and ask if we'd like to play. We say sure, and we play a few games for fun, going back and forth, then it goes to loser buys drinks. Looking back, they let us win that round, then it goes to money and they straight thrash us. To make it even worse they let us play again for double or nothing. I've been beat in pool, but these guys were something else, so good it made you mad knowing you just got hustled.

No, but i did pass on the deal of a lifetime when I turned down the opportunity for a case of (6) brand new Browning sweet 16's after they had been out of production for quite a few years at a steal of a deal all because I didn't want to follow the guy from a gas station at I35 and Motor street over to the back of some warehouse in Brookhollow industrial district. Blew a golden opportunity there.

My dad bought some about 10 years ago out of a van and gave them to me. They don't sound great but I use them for my patio.

I bought a camcorder out of a dudes trunk years ago in a parking lot, this was back when camcorders were expensive, was in a freight box with toshiba bla bla camcorder, he tried $250, I told him I had $100 and that�s all I had, he said no go and keep trying, I said I�ll pass and then he gave me sob story about bla bla and he needed the money bad enough to take 100.. take it home, un box it, turn it on and it turns out it�s nothing more than a sound recorder that looked like a camcorder.. I got hosed, every time I went back to this place I looked for this guy hustling and was gonna beat the breaks off him but never seen him again... guess I would have really been screwed for $250.. learned my lesson, school sucks sometimes

So what did you think you were getting vs what you got?

I had a buddy in high school who could clean the table nearly every time. We went to the Showdown in Commerce and he did the same thing. Late 70'. All I can say is "give me three steps". I didn't think we were going to get out alive.

The speaker scam is right up there with fixing the dents in your car while it sits in the parking lot. Solid scams that, for whatever reason, keep getting enough traction to hang on after all these years.

There antics were quite impressive . I�m sure under the right circumstances they would make outstanding automobile salesman.
