Quick Cleburne State Park/Wheeler Branch Report

Quick Cleburne State Park/Wheeler Branch Report - 05/06/16 02:41 AM

Didn't have anything scheduled yesterday or today so I decided to go fishing. As I get older, I get less motivated to wake up early just to go fishing, or hunting for that matter. I've been wanting to go back to Wheeler Branch and get there early but not leave at 5am to get there when it opens. Sooo....I left for Cleburne State Park mid-day yesterday and fished there until dark last night. Caught 5 or so bass around the edges mainly on hollow body frogs at dusk, saw enough watersnakes to satisfy me for the year and slept (or actually didn't sleep) well enough on the ground in my tent to get up plenty early for the short trip on down to WB.

When I arrived at WB this morning, the lake was glass. Saw several ginormous catfish and lots of bass and perch. At times, I swear I could see at least 30 feet down. Caught another 5 or so bass (saw a bazillion little bass) and headed back to Dallas about mid-day. Fish caught on Senkos, Rage Craws and Zoom Finesse Worms in various shades of green/watermelon.

Most fish caught were around 1 pound with a couple maybe going 3. Caught more small fish on WB. Was expecting clearer water at the state park lake but it was very stained. First time there so not sure if that's usual. The park itself was well kept.

the state park must to of had rain runoff for the lake to be stained.. Stained would mean you could only see about 6 inches of white bait in the water. the lakes normal conditons is you could see about 18 inches to 2 feet with normal water clarity. Not anywhere as clear as WB...
