Looking to buy a Kayak - 04/07/16 03:28 AM
New to the kayak scene here! Looking to buy a Kayak that won't break the bank. (Broke Grad Student here lol.) If anyone has some good deals send them my way. I live by White rock lake, so i need one that will get me around surrounding lakes like hubbard and Tawokoni. THX
Weight has a lot to do with the yak you choose. There are many factors to consider. Some details about you and your needs would make finding a kayak easier.
Weight
Height
Price limit
Desired fishing
I am 6 ft 170 lbs. I like to fish lakes and offshore. I need to stand in my kayak to get bait. I need a good seat so a 10-12 hr trip doesnt kill me. I prefer to paddle. I like to go on 5+ mile trips, texoma and the guf are never less than 10 miles.
This type of thinking will help you pick something you will be pleased with.

Re: Looking to buy a Kayak - 04/07/16 04:33 PM
Thanks for the Info.
Im 6'6'' 240lbs.
price limit is about $500. I want a Sit on Top kayak.
I really want it for fishing up lakes just cruising down the banks, pretty much to spots i wouldn't be able to access on foot.
I will also be using it to fish the marsh in west bay in Galveston.
Id go rent a few kayaks to see what feels good also. Mabey look at a used wilderness ride 115.

Speaking realistically, considering your weight and size, you are going to have a hard time finding a SOT that safely fits you for $500.00. The closer that you get to a kayak's rated payload you start losing stability and tracking. You would be wise to wait a while and save up some additional dollars and get something that is safe and a comfortable fit that you can truly enjoy.
I would ditto Christian's comment about the Mariner Sails Demo Day on the 30th. There will be a good variety of fishing kayaks available to demo that would be a good fit for your physical stature . . . but . . . they will not be in your current $500.00 budget range. Once you demo a few different kayaks you will better understand my words of advice. Take your time, demo as many kayaks as possible and save up a few more bucks before you make that purchase. You will be much happier in the log run.
PONY UP! and hope to meet you on the 30th!

Another suggestion would be to go demo as many kayaks and try to narrow down the style that you are interested in. Then watch Craigslist like a hawk and TFF to find what you need. You can find what you want/need for $500. It will just take time. If you are able to increase the budget, then of course you can get what you want sooner.

THX for all the help. I just requested off work for the 30th. So i'll be there.
Keep an eye put for me, my height alone should help me stand out.
and PONY UP! Mike
I bought mine from the guy in Rowlett that has the tornado damaged kayaks

Interesting topic. I have watched some amazing videos of folks doing some serious bass fishing in these things. I too am very interested now. I have done a little, I mean a little research so far. I was wondering there is a special name for those Kayaks that you can pump the pedals rather than bicycle style? Not interested in rowing.

Hobie is the brand of the "pump" pedals. Hobie kayaks and g2 model santa cruz kayaks can use them. Come to demo days april 30 and try all the kayaks you want.

For under $500 look at the 2-man, orange SOT from Academy. I assume they are still under $500 (they were $400 when I got mine). Bomb proof and very stable. Have caught tons of bass from mine up to 12 lbs, have taken it crashing through rapids on the Guadalupe and use it for taking out shark baits from the jetty at Port A. I have been dragging that thing over granite and scraping down rivers for almost 10 years and it is still going strong. It ain't a fancy Hobbie but it sure does work even on rough waters.
