Crappie fishin by yak?

Would like to target them Saturday on the yak Cedar creek Ray Hubbard or even grapevine and am looking for tips as I have not targeted them on a yak before!! Any tips or does anyone want to join in on this!!!

Do you have electronics or time on the big water to know where brush/structure is that will hold fish this time of year? They are either moving in the creeks where the kayak excels or to deep water cover/structure where the kayak can be difficult to work with due to wind and waves.

That beings said I would look in to a guided trip and let the guide know that you prefer a learning trip that would help you find areas that you can fish out of the kayak and have legally available launch spots that are within reasonable paddling distance. The other alternative burn some gas and time on the water to find the right conditions yourself. I have lots of knowledge on CC and Ray Hubbard some on Grapevine but I am tied up this Saturday.

About a month ago you could get them pretty easy under the I35 bridge on Lewisville with jigs and minnows. Don't know if they are still there but I feel they probably have moved closer to the creeks. I have to work or I would go this weekend.

Pay attention to what Bert says, he is a generous fisherman with a lot of good experience.

My knee jerk response without knowing all your specifics are these generalizations :

Structure ( even bridge columns ) over 20' deep will hold them pretty well right now. Electronics will be a must unless you are on a bridge or up the creek ( no pun intended).
If you are fishing blind, just check your map to find channels and and work the columns first that are deepest. They are still transitional right now and much like the weathermen, are a bit confused with our weather temp transitions. They cycle based on a combo of light duration and temp fluctuations which are quite out of sync right now.

Standard depth guesses will still be in effect. They will be nearer the surface right at sunup and sundown. as the sun rises they migrate downward to the day's suspending depth. If I get up early enough to be there at sunrise, I start at 3-5' deep over much deeper water and drop down in 1' increments until I find them. If I do that with no joy I start going to the bottom and pulling up a couple of feet and hold as still as you possibly can.

My last really good day for Crappie on Hubbard they were 6-7 deep over 22' of water until about 9 AM and then sunk down to 12' deep for the day. We weren't killing them but still limited by noon culling at 11". surprisingly enough the dinks were not very bad the last few trips. Mostly decent fish. The water was not much different than right now. I think it has only dropped about 3 degrees but the sunlight has shortened considerably.

This isn't worth more than the price of a small cup of coffee since I am still on the bottom of the learning curve for crappie, but the last few times I've been out (in a creek and no electronics) I let my jig bounce the bottom as I drift with the current/wind. Once I get a bite I will drift that spot over and over. Have tried sitting in one spot and jigging, but do better when moving.

Some great info guys!! I am definately gonna try this weekend although the closer it gets the more honey do's start popping up...lol!! Maybe a get together of some sort could be in the works for after the holidays..who knows!!!
