A good start to Whisker Season!

A good start to Whisker Season! - 10/19/15 08:04 PM

Headed out to GV this morning to do a little bait scouting since Blue cat season is starting very soon.
A lot of bait but very scattered in small schools and not easy to catch. Managed to catch a few gizzard shad and had just enough time to drag one around for a few minutes, BAM a good start to Whisker season!

This one took longer than most due to trying to keep it out of two drift socks that I had out and I had a hard time
getting it in the net far enough to stay in. I guess 5-8 minutes tops.

I've been going south a lot this summer for reds and sharks so I guess it would only be fair to take a trip up north for some monster blues.

Nice fish!!

Do you use a cast net out of your yak to catch bait, if so how?

Yes, Most important thing is a stable kayak.
Other than that it's almost the same as throwing on dry land. I'd recommend practicing in shallow water close to the truck until you get very comfortable. With water temps in the mid to lower 70's a bath wouldn't be to bad but as the temps drop
into the 60's and below you might want to always have dry clothes close by and a fishing buddy with you just in case.

Some people can throw sitting down, but I've never tried it.

I can throw sitting down, not that hard and I can use a 6 foot radius net if I want usually go with 5 for ease of use.

I was going to try fishing for winter blues from my kayak this year. Do winter time blues move to shallower water? Just trying to learn more about this type of fishing.

Thanks,
Scooter

Winter blues are deeper or in tributaries, follow the bait find the fish just like the rest of the year. Mostly I target the fish in the deeper open lake as they will usually be the big girls.

They will be heading shallow very soon for a short period, Like Bert said, follow the shad.
Then as winter sets in look for Humps, Bumps, drops, & channels in the deeper water with bait around.
