Rain Gear

Rain Gear - 07/09/15 12:58 PM

What type of rain gear do y'all keep with you in the yak? All the rain we've had this summer has made me wish I had some with me when I've been out. I don't mind a small shower or sprinkle but I'd prefer not to be wet all day.

Depends on the time of year.

For Summer - I usually wear a wide rimmed hat that keeps the rain off my face and neck. If i know it might rain hard w/ no chance of thunderstorms I'll take a lightweight rain jacket that is stuffed into it's own little sack & unpack it when i need it. I try to find a jacket that has side vents to make the heat more manageable (things learned from doing skiing up north... i LOVE side vents on jackets).

For Winter/cold weather - i'm usually already wearing waders - and i have a ski coat that is water-proof that i'm always wearing anyway.

I have Frog Togs if I believe its going to be a all day thing and I have to fish lol but what stays on the Yak that's used most of the time is a poncho! easy and will keep you dry! easy on easy off!

Yeah it's hard to beat a poncho for something cheap and not hard to mess with

Honestly, I just wear clothes that dry very quickly. I am already getting wet in the yak due to spray and fish splashing, so a little rain isn't going to hurt at all.

I have some Cabelas lightweight rain gear. I don't carry it unless there's a chance of rain or the water is cold. That raingear saved by butt once in bad weather when the water was still pretty cold at Texoma. In a nutshell, I needed to stay warm/dry against some super bad waves and wind whipped spray. Picture the SS Minnow...glad I had my suit! Not many plan to be out in the rain but you can get dang cold in the middle of summer in a heavy enough rain too .
