Are there any universal rudder kits?

Are there any universal rudder kits? - 04/23/15 04:50 PM

I have an FS12T and am considering putting on a rudder system. I would like one that uses the "foot rest control" system. Is there such thing as a universal rudder kit that can be ran internally? One similar to that of the Jackson Cuda? I am all about the CLEAN look.

Is it the current FS12T or the previous model? Either way, neither come from BP with well nuts installed in the stern for rudder installation, so you'll have to install an access hatch.

It is the newest one. By access hatch are you referring to another round hatch in the rear?

Another? I didn't think there was a hatch in the tankwell.

SmartTrack makes a "universal rudder kit" with gas peddle type stationary foot controls, where you feet stay in a stationary position and you control the rudder kind of like how you use a gas pedal. I added one to my touring kayak and I love it. They make several different kits, so if this is not what you are looking for just do a search to find all of the various kits that they offer.

One can always use jack nuts to make a threaded bolt hole that will hold in the stern, then either make or buy a bracket to hold the rudder ( I make mine). I've done it on 4 kayaks and so far, so good. Also, I find the Sea-lect gas pedal rudder controls far superior to the toe controls at a much less cost.

BTW- well nuts that use compressed rubber won't hold a rudder. Molded in brass nuts work but be warned to use Corrosion X oil or similar when installing bolts into them. Different metals touching each other cause corrosion so ideally, use brass bolts into brass well nuts. Most manufactures use SS bolts into brass well nuts and they can and do "cold weld" themselves in place. PITA to remove and replace.

There isn't one, I was referring to adding one like you proposed.

Mine has the adjustable foot pegs currently. Is there a system that mounts behind it (in between the kayak and foot peg bracket) to control the rudder?

Can the lines on this one be ran internally?

Yes and yes
1)rails available to mount your keeper foot brace system in giving you the ability to turn by sliding the footpegs. Personally, I find this system the least desirable
2)the control cables typically run inside plastic tubing that is installed inside the hull.

That link I gave you to Toms in the above post has good instructions on installing a rudder as does youtube

Why are those less desirable for you?

I'm opposite of Hooked on Kayaks, I actually prefer the sliding rail system as I feel it's a simpler design. It's also what I'm used to and is the type of system I have installed on all four of my kayaks.

One issue with the system that DblNoob posted is that the control pegs above the stationary foot pegs typically are above the deck of the kayak. So if you transport/store your kayak upside down they could get in the way. It's also another thing line could get wrapped around.

All in all it's a personal choice on how you want to control the rudder.

I'm oldschool paddling technique so I actually push on the opposite footpeg as the side i'm paddling on, so the sliders make it a bit harder to do that than a fixed peg. Currenty I have sliders on my motoyak (trolling motor setup) and Sea-lects on my sit inside (paddle only). I found the sliders allow for more turning of the trolling motor and work better for lifting the motor. I agree with Neumie on the stacking issue with toe controls plus they just don't feel good to me. Not that it matters on my SINK but the Sea-lect peddles fold flat below the deck height on other SOTs I've had them on.
