First fish in a Kayak and first lessons in Kayaking - 09/14/13 09:03 PM

Today I went out on Lake Grapevine this morning a little later than i would have liked but better late than never. It was a little breezy to start but i didnt think much of it. I had a target area for bass but made it about halfway when i saw the sandies jumping on shad blown into the rocks.
It was at that point that i learned:
1. The wind is a formidable foe in a kayak
2. I need an anchor
3. 1 rod holder is not enough
4. rigging your second rod should be done on shore and not in the wind when the fish are schooling
5. I am ready for the GTG to see the best way to start rigging for fishing
6. After catching my first fish, I am definately hooked on Kayak fishing.

Congrats. It was a little windy out today. I parked right near the fish, so I didn't paddle much. smile

This.

Congrats.

And yes, you will forever evolve. The GTG will be a great way for you to get up to speed without traveling down any dead-end roads.

Welcome aboard.

Congrats on your first. You will be learning new kayak fishing techniques for may years to come. In fact I learn something new almost everytime I'm out. The most important thing to remember is to be safe while your out. It's always great to see a newbie coming in to this great sport.

Anchors are good but I would also recommend a good drift sock. As you probably noticed. It doesn't take much wind to get pushed around on a yak. A good drift sock helps a lot.

Out of curiosity, would i use the same trolley rig for the sock as i would with the anchor? For what i was doing i wouldn't have minded slowly drifting, I just didnt want to get blown in to shore like all of the bait fish.

I was gonna mention the anchor as well. You want to learn how to use it in calmer weather. An anchor in high winds can cause a roll over, and all kinds of other stuff, like broken rods, and gear pulled overboard. Check out the anchor chord maintenance options. There's a floating spool rig that a lot of people build at home. I'll look for one. The drift socks are great for open areas. It doesn't have to be open water, but they're impossible if your in heavy stumps, and trees, like at Fork. You would connect the sock, to the anchor. I find the Steak out pole, brush grabbers to be my best option, in most cases. In some cases, you might do better to deploy 2 anchors. It's only worth doing, if you're planning to stay for a while.

I use brush grabbers and drift sock much more than anchor. That being said I keep two anchors on board for triangulating my position over structure in open water.
I've never had much use for a stake out pole.

I was actually thinking about grabbing the brush grabbers out of the bass boat the other day, that's all we ever used at toledo bend.
Thanks for all the tips guys, sounds like i'll need several options.
