The bargain cave at Cabela's in Allen had a Otterbox Defender for the IPhone 5 - $25. As of 8/02.

Dick's sporting goods in Allen has numerous brands of line - buy one, get one free including mono, fluoro and braid. Not all brands are on sale.

Yeah not all Academy's have the same sales or even same stuff for that matter so that is definitely false info.

Re: The Good Deals thread - 08/08/13 05:09 AM

I bought the Fuji XP 60 several months ago at Best Buy. Paid a little over $200. Loved the camera but took it back a couple of weeks later when I thought I'd scratched the lens figuring I'd check on what I needed to do to get it fixed. It wasn't a scratch after all, just a fiber that must have stuck to the interior lens. Store was out of stock so they ordered me another one. Got it five days later and they gave me a $40 dollar credit as the price had been dropped. For those that like taking photos this camera is great. Does a lot of stuff I've never used before. Haven't made any videos with it but supposedly those that have say its great. For around $160 bucks its a bargain. Noticed the local Walmart had them at the same price as well.

The Dick's in Harker Heights didn't have their new signs up (as usual) but the clearance soft plastics I bought rang up 50% off. I asked a guy and he knew nothing about anything and went to look at the same price tag I did. SMH. So take that for what it is worth. Possible 50% off clearance soft plastics. Maybe more.

OP asked for used finds too...

A couple of weeks ago, I was poking about on Ebay looking at BTB reels and found a listing for a Penn Jigmaster 500 and a Penn 309 together. Bought them both for $15 and change plus $10 shipping. Figured they would be trashed when they arrived, but they were in pretty good shape. No corrosion, just very dirty. Cleaned them up and they're working great, now.

I have wrestled with the music in the yak thing myself, as I kind of enjoy the lack of noise out on the water, but there are times where fishing is slow and it might make things easier to deal with.

I recently purhcased these for mountainbiking/cycling, but can easily be used in a kayak. They are bluetooth headphones that use the bone conduction technology developed by the military. Music/sound travels thorugh the bone so it leaves your ears open to hear ambient noises, i.e. other cyclists, boats, etc. And I know this will ruffle the feathers of the hard core yakers, but you can also answer your phone if you felt the need to do so!

Aftershokz

They may not technically fall into the good deals thread as they aren't cheap, but good deal if you value your music!

HankS, I seen those rods Friday night at the Academy in McKinney. They even had some yellow Skeet Reese rods for $19.99, Abu Garcia Veritas for $50 or $60 and some other rods. I only find them deals when I am broke.

I think someone in McKinney found them too because I noticed somebody on Craigslist are sellng the AllStar rods for $90.

Apparently Academy is rolling out some new pricing software and this doesn't apply to all stores. You boys enjoy because the Central Texas stores don't have the same prices and won't honor the prices even with a price tag from another store. loco_2

Re: The Good Deals thread - 09/12/13 12:11 AM

I checked a couple of Austin stores, since I'm here for work. No love on the all star rod deals unless you want a poppin rod. I did notice that they had he h2o express mettles on sale for $29 that I also saw mentioned here somewhere. It's weird because the academy in Longview didn't seem to have any, and last I saw they had an overstock of about 200 reels from a less than successful Father's Day sale.
Posted By: ChrisTexan

Re: The Good Deals thread - 09/12/13 02:50 PM

Mettles are hit-and-miss, the stores basically get in shipments of 10 or 20 at a time, and when they are having their $25 sale on them, they typically sell out in 1-2 days.
Last time I wanted some, I found out the shipment was coming in that night, and to call in the morning to make sure they were there, they got a shipment of 10, I called and reserved 4 on hold at the store opening, when I picked them up at lunch, I think 2 others were left besides my 4.

Academy had some buffs on sale. A few were marked $4.98 but scanned at $2.49, and the others were marked $2.98 but scanned at 1.49. There wasn't a large selection of patterns, but they're cheap enough that it didn't matter to me.

Just a heads up.

The Bass Pro Shops Ascend FS12 Sit On Top Kayaks will be on sale from November 27th to December 1st.

They will be $100 off, which is a pretty awesome deal (regularly $499 on sale for $399). This is actually the first time they have ever gone on sale.

Not a bad beginner platform for the price.

On sale again - 26" and 44" depending on what you want to do. I used my 48" for the first time this week and it worked well with the PA - I would expect the 44" to work well for those with larger yaks who want major slow down. The nylon seems to be a better sock than the PVC - I expect it to last longer, shakes off well - lighter and packs well.

Re: The Good Deals thread - 12/05/13 05:26 PM

I think ill go witht he bigger one anyways. I find myself in alot of 15mph+ situations so the big one would probably be better all around. plus it says the small one doesnt come with the drain strap or whatever.

Also after reading reviews people had commented the ratings were overrated and to go bigger anyways.

Not expensive to begin with but I am building a "tackle/rod" cabinet and needed something to hold the rod ends - this will be a lot easier than what I was planning on fabricating. Maybe someone stocks these but never seen them before.

Re: The Good Deals thread - 12/10/13 05:47 PM

Something I found out at Cabelas yesterday. They often carry the items in the store and online at different prices - the online always being the cheaper when different. They will match the in-store price with the online price. For example, I picked up another battery yesterday - it rang up $19.99 but I showed the cashier where it was $14.99 on the website. No problem to change the price and several managers said they will always do this.

For those of you that want an economical light strip for your yak. Academy in Arlington ( 1101 W Arbrook) has the 26.9" no limits LED lighting strips for $12.99. I know they aren't the best but it's a start for some folks.

this thread has cost me plenty of bucks - really saved me plenty - so here is one I ran across today - Had a pair of NRS gloves for over 12 years and finally wore them threat bare and out – looking for replacements and found basically the same thing here – highly recommend these for sun protection - - -

here at NRS.com

NRS Men's Boater's Gloves – Closeout – regular 24.95 marked down to 16.25

-The NRS Boater's Gloves are ideal for any type of boating. Lightweight backs, tough palms and three-quarter fingers.
-Great protection from sun and blisters and excellent finger dexterity.
-With lightweight spandex backs, these gloves are cool, comfortable and quick-drying. They provide UPF 50+ sun protection for your hands.
-Three-quarter finger design leaves your fingers free to tie ropes and flies and to flip through your NRS catalog.
-The Amara® synthetic leather palms provide easy grip and a soft feel, plus excellent blister prevention.
-The wristband has a hook-and-loop "golf/bike glove" style closure for a secure, easy fit.
-A soft strip of fleece on the inner side of your hand is perfect for wiping the sweat from your brow without chafing.

Re: The Good Deals thread - 07/12/14 12:12 PM

Wow, good find Artie. Great deal on those Curado's. Even though those are the slightly older model with only 5 bearings (newer Curado has 6) but still is probably a $200+ reel. I may try to get one from him. And he also has that brand new St. Croix Fly Rod for $90 - man that's a $250 rod right there! Well, my good deal aint quite this good but did see that the Academy in Frisco has all their Zoom lizards on sale for $1.99 a bag and they even have that Tomato colored one which I just bought a bag of from Bass Pro last week for $4 something. Dang it!

Re: The Good Deals thread - 07/14/14 07:26 PM

Good deal on those Curado's for sure just wish he lived a little closer to Fort Worth. ACademy has Seaguar red label Fluorocarbon on sale for $8.99 heck of a deal right there! I also found one random Columbia fishing shirt on Clearance for $19.88 down from $48!

Dick's Sporting goods is having a really good clearance sell right now 25-50% additional off of all clearance tackle. Buy 1 get 1 free UA fishing shirts, etc. I picked me up a really nice Diawa Exceler combo, 7.3:1 ratio reel and 7'MH rod for $72 down for $119. They also had some Shiman Crucial rods that would have come out to around $80+tax down from $150. Go check em out!

These aren't expensive to begin with but are on "hot sale". Both 3" and 4" size - I usually keep a few packets in glow/pearl/chart/silver shad colors - good time to stock up if you use them.

Bass Pro shops Pro-Qualifier Baitcasting reel is $50 during the spring fishing event. Unbelievable reel at that price. Also have last years carbonlite rods at 40% off. I picked up 2 of each tonight.

Edit: All BPS should have the pro-qualifier special. The Carbonlite rods are not advertised. All stores may not be discounting the rods. Got mine in grapevine.

I just stopped by my local Radio Shack in Sulphur Springs. They are going out of business and everything is 50-70% off. They had Sealed Lead Acid batteries on clearance. I bought 3 12v 12ah batteries for $9 a piece. I also picked up a 7ah for $10. I bought a couple of toggle switches for 70% off as well. Might be worth looking into your local Radio Shack to see what they may have.

If you are looking for a new kayak under $300, check
out Atwoods Farm & Ranch stores. They have sit ins &
sit on tops for about $269. They look to be better
equipped than Walmart's & Academy's for that price.
I checked their web site couldn't find a picture of
them. So check one of their stores.

Re: The Good Deals thread - 08/12/15 07:53 PM

Found these at Wmart (same price as below which is 1/3 the price of the similarly sized PLano or Flambeau brands)
The size is a little larger than the Flambeau WP5001 or Plano FTO Elite 3700
I actually like these better (the trays are wider and deeper--can fit very large topwaters/swimbaits or more lures in the box easily)

The latch mechanism isn't quite as robust as the Plano or Flambeau designs, but is sturdy enough

$99 Costa's

Normally see the gray and silver mirror Costa's for a good price around this time, but never see the green mirror. I know they are 580p and not glass, but I'm off glass now. Not that big of a difference in clarity for my eye safety.

Austin Canoe and Kayak is having their Memorial Day Sale through May 28th. Two shows this spring so far, one show had boats at 6% off list and another event had boats at 7% off. While they don't have all boats on sale, I did notice some Wilderness boats at 15% off. One example was the relatively new Attack 120.
