How many rods on your kayak on an outing?

How many rods on your kayak on an outing? - 04/27/18 05:25 PM

Just looking to see what everybody is taking with them when they go out. Just out of curiosity. First time I went out I took 4 rods, 1 spinning, 3 casting. Flipping/pitching (probably will phase that out with a shorter rod at some point), cranking, worm/other stuff rod, and finesse spinning rod. Figured 4 at that selection would do me good.

Anybody carry more/less when they go out?

3 max. And that's usually 1 too many.

If Im going to small, 40acre lake by my house, I take 3 rods, 1 plano 3700 box and several bags of Plastics.
1 spinning rod rigged for weightless T-Rig, a casting setup for swimbaits (my go to) and another for Jigs/creature baits I can toss into bushes Laydowns.
When I go to Conroe, take 4 bait casters - swimbait, shaky head, cranks/top water, and one for jigs/creature baits. 1 spinning rod of weightless T-rig and typically my light spinning rod for crappie. I also take way more gear - 2 3700 boxes (one for crappie jigs) and several 3600 boxes for cranks, jigs, top waters, etc.

I'm actually planning on getting one more rod. Having to retie lures on kayak sucks. In 2-3min it takes to tie and rig I can drift or be blow quite a bit away unless I drop anchor.

I think it really depends on how much room you have. I've got a PA14, with plenty of room. Being able to just grab a different rod for different situations saves quite a bit of time.

Usually 2, sometimes 3. Always a light spinning and medium spinning. Sometimes a medium baitcaster.

One fly rod.

I think at one time in the past I had as many as eight baitcasters and a spinning rod on board, but wow, that seems so ridiculous to me now. I have so much more fun keeping it simple.

Always two when I fished saltwater, inshore or offshore, now up to 4 fishing for bass. bang

I take 3:
One baitcaster for plastics
One baitcaster for spinnerbaits/etc
One spinning for dropshot

Most of the time I could leave the spinnerbait baitcaster at home. I usually just fish with plastics most of the time anyway.

If I am running down to the dock and launching on my home lake using my canoe, often just one rod and a angler's bag. Very finesse.

On my Propel 10 now that I have 4 Rocket launcher rod holders behind me, I have taken 4 out of late, rarely use more than two. Finesse guys don't seem to need as many as power guys or guys fishing from boats.

Always one tied on for a drop shot.
A second would be for a wacky worm or T-Rigged worm.
A third might be a Keitech shad-type bait, my hottest lure so far in April.

By the fourth, I am really struggling, knowing that I likely will never get around to using it. A top-water frog or Yellow Magic would be great at times, so would a chatterbait or spinnerbait or some hard bait.

Usually 3. The mix varies but typically 1 fly rod and then the other 2 are spinning or 1 spin / 1 baitcast.

I like 4. One with heavy tackle for bottom fishing with bait, one with a bass rig on it for while I’m paddling to my destination (Caught many fish this way), then two with jigs for either whites or crappie. I hate having to tie on something new while drifting in a cove.

If I felt like I could get away with less rods I would. But I use every one of them so i haven't thinned it out in a good while. I'm working on getting a fly rig added. Just waiting on a few things. I'm sure eventually I'll get a rod that will work for flipping and my t rig. That will free up a rod.

3 fly rods. Strip the loose line right on top of the two not being used in my WS Commander. I might switch between 3 fly patterns all day and it’s nice to not have to constantly tie knots and eat up tippet. Freshwater, it might be something bigger and on the surface, something that sinks, and something small for things like blue gill. Saltwater, it could be a shrimp pattern, a baitfish type, and something weightless.

Used to do one fly rod and two baitcasting rigs. That would be the fly of the day, a topwater, and a tail on a jig or a suspending plug. I’ve done as many as four rods, but 4 seems to multiply issues getting tangled with each other. I’ve done one or two rods. Two is alright, but sometimes I wish I had the third. One, something could happen to that one, usually when the big fish is in sight, and while I mess with the one, the fish swims away.

varies depending on what i am doing. for serious fishing outings i usually average 3 - with each rigged for a different type/style of fishing. That said I love going down with just 1 reliable rod and fishing as well on some trips - I don't mind the fishing downtime to re-rig since i'm just enjoying being out on the water anyway.

Sometimes when i'm taking friends with me I'll go out with as many as 7 rods - but that is because I'm fishing for myself as well as having spares for them to swap to.

One spinning rod n reel and a spare. I understand the dilemma of choosing what to take and what to leave behind. I have a collection of rods n reels that usually don't make the final cut. I keep saying that someday I'm gonna switch it up and go back to bass lures and bait casters, but I enjoy finess fishing with jigs on light tackle. When I'm bank fishing I only carry one rod n reel.

3 when just playing around for fun. 7 if competing in a tournament and didn't prefish.

Up to 7 if bass fishing. Typically 3 or 4 for saltwater and 4 or 5 for bass fishing for fun.

I took seven on Sunday
1 Frog
2 big swimbait
3 t rig
4 underspin
5 senko
6 jig
7 weightless fluke

Ended up catching them all on the frog and the fluke, but did throw all seven set ups until I had the pattern dialed in.
