My New Redneck Kickboat! - 06/17/11 03:58 PM
I found so many great posts for the Water Wagon, Foam Boats that I had to try to do one for myself. I got the foam from a mfg in Midlothian and then went to work. After several ideas, I settled on what you see below. I used foam to wood adhesive to glue the plywood to the seat area. This is for attaching a cushion and seat-back. I also glued wood blocks as mounting bases for my homemade rod holders. Forget Scotty, I made these bad boys for about $5 each! One for a baitcaster and one for a fly rod.
Blocks for eye-bolts in the rear to secure a crate with bungee cord and a block on the front for a rope cleat to secure an anchor. The PVC bar is for a foot rest and attached to it is a roller to thread the anchor rope for easy anchor handling.
And for the ultimate redneck accoutrement, gun slings attached to hinges screwed in the wood seat base for use as shoulder straps to carry the whole thing on my back!
Her maiden voyage (since being finished) is set for tomorrow when a buddy and I go pond hopping.

Dude, no can holders? You could have turned that thing into the worlds largest Beer Koozie! Not that I endorse that sort of thing

Can holders... yes, I plan to add those and maybe a larger cut-out for some tackle trays. I imagine I'll keep finding ways tweak it until I get to the point I need a trailer to carry it all!
The dimensions are: 65" long, 49" wide and 12" thick. The cut-out for the legs are 24" by 24".
I coated with an elastomeric roof paint that I got from lowes. It cures like a nice thick, flexible skin. It comes in white, but I had them tint it a light tan.

Did you have a wooden frame?

Re: My New Redneck Kickboat! - 06/17/11 08:54 PM
No Sir. It is all EPS foam. The wood used for mounting bases are just cut pieces of 1" X 4" board and playwood for the seat area. I glued them to the foam using a foam to wood adhesive found at Lowes. Stuff cures like concrete. If the wood comes off, it's taking have the foam boat with it!

I did recess the mounting blocks to mitigate the chances of them being knocked or caught on stuff.

That is sweet, I made some similar but without the wood. What was the name of the glue you used for plywood to foam?

Nice job. If you're like me, you'll be tweaking that thing for the next two years. I sat in one of mine all day yesterday catching bream on the fly. Only way to go with the wind blowing on smaller waters.

Do you mind telling the cost of the foam? I have a friend moving to midlothian soon & I am interested in building one for me & one for my son. Also is that the only size it comes in?

My experence with this glue is if you submerge it,it will brake down. But if it is out of the water it may be fine. I use gorilla glue, it is the best stuff I have been able to get, it will rip a chunk out of the foam before the glue will fail, but it is very expensive.

The maiden voyage went great! The wind was brutal at the first pond we went to. Too windy to fly fish, so I used my baitcaster. My buddy and I finished at about 11am with 10-13 bass a piece.
From there we went to the pond off of Bowman Springs Road in the Arlington nature preserve. Carried our boats from the gate to the lake and were on the water maybe two minutes when someone from a house yelled to us that boats were not allowed. I looked it up on the city website and it was true. We decided we did not want to risk getting a ticket and took off. Shame too, the water was very calm there and the place looked great!
Finished the day on the Southern end of Joe Pool Lake in Walnut Creek. Found some calmer water after battling the wind and started catching fish immediately on my new TFO Mini-Mag with Sage 290 grain line. That thing is a cannon!
All in all, the boat performed very well. The scuba fins worked great and the PVC bar across the front allowed me to pull my feet out of the water when anchored. Having the anchor system in the front worked okay, but the makes you have to cast into the wind and the anchor gets in the way when kicking when it is hoisted. I think I will mount a Scotty anchor buddy on the backside of the boat.
You are right "rockhopper", I definitely have some tweaks to do. I got pretty good chunks taken out of it from the stumps in Joe Pool. Going to investigate if I can put a polyurethane on top of that rook paint without burning the foam underneath.
"Gotreal", I definitely need a seat and backrest, but that may be taking the redneck a little too far...
"Hotmod", I got the foam block with the cut-out for $75.
"Sumo", thanks for the tip. I did not know that. However, I did seal all of the seams of the wood to foam with a silicone caulk to prevent water from getting in. I then painted over the wood with the roof paint. This should keep the glue away from the water.

If you wanted to keep the cost and weight down you could use a stadium seat, it would fold flat so it would not take as much room when storing it. I considered using them on a few of my boats. Wall-mart has a some pretty good ones.I am sure you will have a million ideas before it is done.

You can also try a anchor trolley system for it like on the yaks so wont need another anchor fot it

How much are you selling those for? I'd like one about 8-10 ft. long. Is there any way to seal, or cover the foam to make it more durable?

I believe rockhopper sells his FloatPro's. Just google FloatPro for his website with pricing. Pretty cheap and they look awesome.
I made mine just for me. With two small kids and my schedule, no time for mass production!
I used an elastomeric roof paint to coat mine. It works pretty well. I even hit a few stumps the other day and sustained minimal damage.
Anyone think that I could apply polyurethane over the roof paint? Thinking about coating the bottom and sides with it for some extra durability. I know fiberglass is an option, but I am looking for something easy.

Any chance that truck bed liner would work on this foam? Like Rhino liner?

I heard it would, as long as it is water based coating NOT oil based.

Spray-on bed liners are made from polyurea. It is safe to use on foam. Only problem is price. Cheapest quote I could get from local applicators was around $150. I got the roof paint for $23.

they have a product at Lowe's called ??(can't remember the name) but its a paint used to put on roofs to reflect the sun; it is ok to use on stryafoam. I've used it to put a protective coat on both of my stryafoam kick boats-p-
