Somerville - 12/15/16 11:24 PM

Somerville is fishing real good now. With the floods here the last two years the bass fishing is seeing the upside of the high water. The bas are feeding heavily on shad and are feeding like crazy. I have been three weeks in a row now and the smallest 5 I had was about 22 lbs. caught a 7 and a 9 on Wednesday with 3 more that went close to 30 lbs. A lot of smaller fish are being caught shallow but the bigger fish are deeper.
I expect this coming pre spawn to be the best in many years on Somerville.

Most of the big fish have came on a CR brush hog. Have caught some lately on a shad colered 6 xd.

That's awesome!!!! Do you expect those big ones to move shallow pre-spawn. I fly fish so I would love to know when they move shallow. I've been catching a ton of 2 lb. bass in the creeks on my fly rod, it's a blast.

No question that the flooding and 2 years of little fishing pressure has done great things for the lake. I actually think I heard your story while fishing at the dam with Steven.

Somerville is like most other lakes when it comes to big bass. The big females will make the move to shallow water way before the bulk ok the fish move in. Most people miss the really big girls move to the shallows because they are waiting on good weather. The really big ones move early in Feb to get ready for the spawn. In my option that's the best time to catch a trophy when the weather is nasty in Feb you can catch your biggest bass.

Went there this past Monday. 5 that went around 27. Never been on the lake before. Super decision on the first spot. A 9 and two 6's. After that it was one here, one there.

Had another 30 lb day today with one over 9. Big fish came on 6 xd in blue boy color. Not the numbers of last trip but better quality. The fish are really moving to their winter patterns. I did catch several shallow on the rocks but 5 would only go about 12 lbs. All big fish are deeper.

Re: Somerville - 12/23/16 06:26 PM

Wish I had seen this post earlier, we went yesterday and I only managed 8 fish. Nothing big, largest was 3 lbs. Water was stained, temps were 53 main, 54 in the back of the coves. We found little to nothing to flip to since the lake appears to be at pool. Only shad to speak of were piled around the island across from Outlook park, didn't see much in the coves. What little trees are left above the water are chock full of cormorants and painted [censored] white. Winds were a factor but we fished all over with best results around boat ramps and points. All fish were caught on Tx rig creature baits and traps.

King I know you saw me yesterday. I was by the Rocky ramp when you came by. All but 2 of my fish came on cr. 1 on cb and 1 on a jigging spoon in 20 fow. Weighed 5 lbs and was pale white.
A lot of shad were at that depth and the bass were with them.

I would have tried C/r But that rod and reel are stuck at the rod and reel repair till jan 2nd ugh! We tried the rock hump with no luck and didn't see any shad over there. Overlook has all the dang shad and that's the last place we came back to.

Re: Somerville - 12/25/16 02:27 AM

Today was a lot tougher bite. Only had one over 7 and only caught about 10 total. All on cr around the island.
King I don't get it. How can you tell a guys age while driving by and then refer to him as an old guy?

Re: Somerville - 12/25/16 01:24 PM

Its easy, Lots of gray, and a lot of patience to sit in one spot that long lol.

Re: Somerville - 12/25/16 04:04 PM

King maybe your getting a title old yourself and need to get glasses. The gray you saw was my Simms sun mask and staying in one place for a while don't mean your old it just may mean you were catching fish and not having to run all over the lake looking for them.

Re: Somerville - 12/27/16 02:51 PM

Somerville bass has bounce back really good on bass. I don't target them but catch them by accident on almost every trip I've been up there this year. Yesterday I must of pull in over 15 nice bass in one spot caught by accident. I was throwing a KVD crank bait in chartreuse color over a ledge that goes 5-7' shallow then drop off to 15'. They were stacked up all along on top of that ledge. I think they were soaking in the warm weather ? Water temp climbed up to 59 degrees yesterday. I was targeting white bass but kept getting hooked up on bass. I've never seen such a large concentration of good size bass in one location. I would say if you ain't catching them you proably looking at the wrong area. Just a few weeks ago I caught a fat one by accident hangging out in 15' fow next to some stump structures. All them bass was hitting the crank bait on a moderately slow retrieved.

And the cycle of life begins again.

Btw I also notice some of those spotted bass are developing egg sacks. Some of the sacks looks semi mature ready. Interesting observation such a big fish but looks to have smaller egg sacks compare to them smaller whites.

Will the ongoing rain affect fishing in the lower lake? I have minimum experience with Somerville. Thanks
