Very very little and fish were dinks. Nothing like past years. Tons of bait in the H2O. Can't figure it out.

The C.A.S.T. Tournament on Saturday was won with four fish weighing 5.31 lbs. Big bass was 2.71, caught by my daughter. She ended up with second place as well with 4.25 lbs. The big bass was caught on a spinner bait off a main lake flat point first thing in the morning. Got a few fish on a Zara Spook Jr. Once the sun hit the water the bites were few and far between with nothing but dinks landed.

Tons and tons of shad in the lake. The fish almost have too much bait to eat. I wonder if a lake the size of Belton can become "stunted" when there is a lot of forage?

no such thing as too much to eat.

that lake needs as much forage as possible anyways with all the whites and hybrids.

It seems all the central Texas lakes are struggling with size at the weigh-ins lately. Whitney, Belton, Waco, even Stillhouse have had fishing reports indicating no one is having good days on the water recently. What should we attribute this lack of quality and size too?

gotta be the super low lake levels that came up to full pool or higher. i think it has the fish acting weird.

Are you saying over or under stocking?

Under on largemouths. Hasn't been a stocking in 17 years. Lots of bad spawn years due to water fluctuations. There are entire cohorts (age classes) that are almost nonexistent.

Understood, but the # of 10"-12" fish in this lake is crazy. In my opinion, they should lift the slot for several years and allow harvest of the abundance of small fish. This would improve the food chain/growth rate of the 14" and overs.

i think it's pretty obvious tpwd is trying to make it a smallie lake.

but i don't agree with most of tpwd's decisions in the first place, so i'm biased on this...

Fishing is just tough right now, it always is during June/July. It has nothing to do with the population of fish. Daniel and I have caught some of our biggest bags on Belton this year and Daniel also caught his personal best, an 11 lber last month. Its still taking some fairly decent fish to win the Wednesday night jackpots.

Belton has always been a good smallmouth lake, and personally I'm glad that they stock it.

If you aren't good at using your electronics and fishing deep you aren't going to fare very well on Belton or Stillhouse this time of year. Both lakes fish extremely deep. You have to have some patience, but when you find them they are bunched up.

My five year old son had a 6 lber on last Wednesday and there were several fish weighed over 3 1/2 lbs last Wednesday.

You guys that are struggling might try fishing at night, you can fish shallow and still catch good ones on tx rigs and jigs. Otherwise you are going to have to get comfortable fishing deep and using your electronics. And you can't just pull up to any random point and catch them, you're going to have to fish and put the time in to find the most productive ones.

Don't give up fellas, they are still out there.
