Lotus & Coontail in Pond

I Have a 6 acre pond that has quite a bit of coontail and lotus growth. I searched forums for "Lotus" no results. Was wondering what the best herbicide for Lotus is.

Any advice or experiences to share?

I've had good results with Rodeo or Navigate for the Lotus(EDIT:corrected coontail duplication), and a mix of Reward and Cutrine for the coontail. A non-ionic surfactant will greatly help both chemicals adhere better to the targeted plants.

I'm also in my second year of grass carp for coontail control, and it's too early to get a feel for the results. I know coontail is not a preferred plant for grass carp, but if they work, that would certainly ease the spraying.

As a side note, a contact herbicide like Reward will also brown out lotus very quickly, but doesn't seem to kill the whole plant. The glyphosates like Rodeo will travel through the plant, and give better long term results.

Maybe salex will see this and chime in. I bet he deals with this plant combo a lot.

I'm seeing a lot more coontail than in the past. But with the current temps and no rain in the forecast, it might just be high and dry before long.

Lotus can also be effectively controlled by aquatic glyphosate, right now would be the best time to treat the lotus. As the temperatures go up the lotus will be increasing water intake thru their leaves. Yes navigate would be good choice also, either needs to have a surfactant added to the mix.

Coontail depending on the amount and your water usage (cows, people, irrigation, etc) will determine what herbicide you will use. Naviagte, reward, aquathol, or hydrathol are all good options but the pervious statement on usage really will determine what you should use.

I had someone else recommend the Rodeo as well. I am looking to kill the root and all. This pond is about 50 years old or so. The lotus growth has gotten to about 45% of the pond. I have been fighting leaking dam walls that have hurt the level of water I have been able to maintain. The flooding we had here recently wrecked havoc on my place... So I know if I also can maintain deeper water levels, that will prevent growth as well.

If it is Lotus use AquaPro (Glyphosate)

If it is just Coontail use Reward (Liquid Diquat) more effective than Aquathol K (Endothall) for coontail. While Aquathol K is effective for coontail Reward is better. If you have Niad mixed with coontail; Aquathol K is better for Niad. If you do have both coontail and Niad, which is often the case; flip a coin as either will work just fine.

Are there any effects to bald cypress by these herbicides listed before.

The pond has about 20 bald cypress around the banks and waters edge... Do not want the herbicide to take a toll on those.

I can't seem to find anything on this.

Avoid overspray, and everything listed above is not going to be much of threat to trees around the pond.

Herbicides commonly used but not mentioned above, that may be a threat includes Fluridone (trade name "Sonar") and Diuron (trade name "Karmex"). These are systemic herbicides that may be adsorbed by tree roots in the water and could cause damage.

Fluridone (Sonar) is labeled for aquatic use and at the extreme low end of treatment levels (less than 12 ppb) should not be problematic, at higher dosages it could damage or kill trees. I'm sure the label has limits listed.

Diuron is not even legal for use in aquatic systems other than those used expressly for the production of channel or blue catfish and/or their hybrids as food for human consumption (fish farm), so it shouldn't even be in play, but folks use it anyway. It can also kill your trees.

Love Sonar..But very very expensive. Would love to use more of it, but at 10x to 20X its hard for most lake owners to justify. Sonar's effects last much much longer than the traditional contact Herbicides. Small ponds = smaller dollard. Big Ponds = Big dollars.

I went with Rodeo for this first round. It isn't as expensive as a lot of the other herbicides out there. But from what I found, it seems to be a decent choice to start...

Will that one be ok for the Cypress trees?

Just don't spray it right on them and should be no worries.
