Pond Herbicide

Hey Guys,
What is the best herbicide that you have found to take care of the broadleaf weeds that grow from bottom of pond to the top and above the water? I have some kind of weed that I can't identify to save my life that is choking the bank out and 10 ft out? I have tried Pond Master Surface and Shoreline and it just wilts the leaves for a bit then nothing.

Look into Karmex. It is granules that some dissolve into a sprayer but my guy told me to throw it out into the water by hand. It does a pretty good job in my pond. You may have to go to an ag chemical type place to get it.

If the leaves are above water you might try good ol round up. It's a broadleaf weed killer and there isn't much it don't wipe out.

Funny but I don't recall Roundup as being approved for pond applications....nor Karmex for that matter. Perhaps Anchorman could provide that data sheet?

But to the question asked by the Op....the best pond "herbicide" I have ever found is a combo of grass carp and Tilapia. Non-carcinogenic, healthy, natural, easily controlled, cheap in comparison to chemicals, and fun to catch.

Sure, do what ever you want in your pond...but when you advise others to use chemicals in a manner that is not approved, tested, or certified as safe for humans, then I believe that is acting irresponsibly.

Ponds overflow...often the overflow makes its way into the sources for drinking water.

Ponds are frequented by livestock. I raise cattle...and there's no way I want to contaminate my product with chemicals that are potentially harmful not only to the environment but to humans who consume them.

Ponds are often the source of fish used for human consumption....you may be fine with consuming carcinogenic fish...but most are not.

A lot of people swim in ponds....including my own grandchildren. The thought of deliberately poisoning them with chemicals is just beyond rational.

Country? LOL. Country does not mean ignorant, irresponsible behavior.

I think that you need a definitive id on the weed plant, and then you might consider applying the product that is specifically labeled for dealing with it. Your description sounds something like American Pondweed which is quite pervasive in NE Texas during the summer months. Once established in a pond, it will usually cover the shallow perimeter. If indeed, your weed is AP, Acquathol K is effective in controlling it. A piecemeal application would probably be best to minimize dissolved oxygen loss.

AGR_Junior, take a pic if you can. What you're describing also sounds a lot like Water Primrose. Are there any yellow flowers on the weeds?

If so, Roundup Custom is now available, and it's approved for water use also. Rodeo also works well.

As others have said, the first step is plant identification.

Then you MUST have an EPA general NPDES permit in order to use ANY and ALL pesticides in or around it. Approved ones, too.

Most folks don't realize, even in your own pond, you have to have an EPA general permit in hand prior to making any applications of any kind of chemicals biologicals, or other water and/or habitat modifying substances.

Didn't know that, Fishbreeder....or Brett( since it isn't ok to use handles here anymore, LOL)....but it never applies to me cause I go all natural. Thanks.

Have few grass carp already, the bass will eat the tilapia unless they are big.

Horses drink out of the pond so want make sure it's safe for both animals and fish

For me at least, it's easy to control, but difficult to eradicate. Difficult in the sense it mingles with the shoreline and any more beneficial aquatic plants you may want to keep. It occupies the same water as most shallow/shoreline plants like American Pondweed, sages and reeds, and hardy lilies.

Hard to tell without a few close up pics. But I agree with Fire is Hot. It looks like Waterleaf. But it is an emergent plant so any of the aquatic approved glyphosates will work. Rodeo is a good choice.

That's quite a stand, AGR...and even though I choose not to use chemicals normally, if that were my pond I would get it under control with Rodeo as Salex advised and then keep it in control naturally.
