Lake Clark and Old Lake in Ennis - 05/09/12 01:47 AM

Has anyone fished Lake Clark or Old Lake in Ennis? If so what are your thoughts on the lakes? Also what did you use to catch them with? I was thinking about going out to both this weekend.

I went out on a John boat last weekend to Old Lake, and I went to Lake Clark the two weekends before that. Caught fish at each stop. Both lakes are good and the fish are starting to get more active. I had great luck at Lake Clark with a black beetle spinner with a chartreuse tail. Caught a nice 2 pounder off of that. Also had good luck with a watermelon finesse worm with a chartreuse tail. Either spinners or Texas rigging with soft plastics works well on both lakes. At Old lake caught a really nice bass on a 3 inch black with red speckle finesse worm. I Texas rigged it and worked through lilly pads. We had really good luck with purple color worms as well. Old lake definitely has some nice fish.

Thx I am going to give Lake Clark a shot maybe sat afternoon. Going to try and pull some LGB and Crappie out from underneath some of those trees all over the banks out there. Also I saw two different Jon Boats out there both with out stickers. Do u need them out there? If not I wanna take my new to me Pelican Bass Raider out there for a test run in stead of using my canoe.

There were some guys catching some nice crappie off the rocks at Old City lake a couple weeks ago. You do need stickers. I've never seen the Warden at Old City Lake, but he is at Clark often.

I went out to old lake.before it got to windy this morning and got zero crappie so i switched back to my plastic worms and lizards and hooked 12 large mouth but no keepers all where from 8 to 12 inches.

We are thinking about checking out Clark next weekend. My dad likes to use minnows. Anyone know where to buy minnows around Ennis? thanks

There is a store at the corner of S. Kaufman and Lampassas that sell them (east side of the road on Kaufman). Or you can go across Bardwell bridge and a new store that has just opened past the bridge on the right has a sign out that says they do. Or you can go to Highview Marina at Bardwell.

UPDATE:

Been fishing Old Lake for the past few weeks and I have had great luck fishing weightless, bright colored worms. Seems to work a lot better than Texas rigging. I've been using Zoom trick worms weightless and getting the best results I've had so far.

Good luck!

Yes there are crappie in old city lake .. I live on old city lake
, my backyard is on the lake .. There are some great bass on both lakes .. Lately old city lake for a small lake has been fished hard so it's been tough .. There are lunkers in both lakes .. FYI .. Some fisherman have been culling out small bass but watck out for the Ellis county game warden , he is sneaky and he does check boats inbound from fishing ..

There have been some trophy bass caught from old city lake this year , I've caught 3 and released them
Back but I know of 3 trophy that have been taken . One was killed from a fisherman using live perch that got stuck down bass's throat and 2 other that we're transferred to their friends private pond . So with that being said I don't know how much longer old city lake will be the lake that it has with the way things have been going recently .. But I know most of the fellow fisherman on here are respectful of all lakes for the future of its legends

As far as carp goes in old city lake , yes they are in there and one is a monster 4 -6 footer . I have snagged him twice by accident and he gave me the fight of a lifetime and got away and I've seen him sun bathing on shallow island on multiple occasions ..

Clark is good fishing because they have an abundance of bait fish all over the lake.

I know this is an old topic recently resurrected, but I fish there once or twice a week in my kayak. Fishing is tough this time of year. Granted, I'm not a great angler, but I'm averaging less than a fish a trip the past month. Morning SEEMS better than evening. I caught a decent bass last week on a chartreuse lizard.
