The best one is the one in my hand with a fish on the other end.

Now you need a special one for each lure.

Spinning reel for windy days and light baits.

Baitcaster for heavier baits and generally the best all-round bass reel because you can use heavier line for pulling them out of cover.

The best one you can afford... it's like asking which truck will pull your boat the best?

Zebco 33 with 12 # XL will fill the skillet.

Welcome to TFF Charles. I see you are new. Just know when you ask an open-ended question like you did, you may get a lot of wise crack answers.

It is kind of like asking which is prettier, the blond or brunette. wink

There are a multitude of good reels on the market today. Choosing the right one for you begs a few questions like:

What is your budget?
Can you throw a baitcaster?
What type of fishing do you prefer?

Be a little more specific and you will come closer to getting the answers you need.

Pretty much covers it. You could go to BPS or Academy, look at the different reels and talk to a salesman. Let him know the type of fishing you're interested in and your experience. No sense buying a $300 reel and not know how to use it. You can catch fish with a Zebco 202 if that's all you're wanting to do.

As stated before get the best one you can afford and go from there. Just my 2 cents but I prefer Shimano. Grew up with Ambassadeurs then tried Diawas and a few Lew's but am impressed with the toughness of the Shimanos and maintaining them myself. They cast easily into the wind if you learn to set them up and you can repair/upgrade parts if you want. Biggest drawback to me is the older ones are increasingly hard to find parts for. Biggest thing I think is find what you like and stick with it as long as it holds up. I have a buddy that fishes the Academy brands exclusively and he doesn't have many problems either.

My Diawa Tatula's say otherwise.

My chronarchs work but why challenge someone new with an advanced skill?

Only reason I say the Tatula is besides casting a country mile its antibacklash system is amazing. My wife never tried a bait caster in her life and I used it to teach her. She slung that thing all day and never backlashed once even with a 4" superfluke on a 2/0 hook. I will say though they do have a steep price tag and might be a bit much for someone who may not even like baitcasters.

Just find one that's comfortable in your hand. Don't focus to much on brand. They are all good. It's also OK to use spinning reels. They will work just fine and you can throw heavy baits and get fish out of cover with them. I have pulled Bull Reds and Snook out of some nasty stuff so bass will not be an issue with them. Their downside is they are bulky and I personally have less accuracy with them casting to targets.

This reel is the most backlash free reel that I have ever used and I have been through a bunch of them in the past 40 years of fishing. It is truly an amazing reel. You can get them for a great price on ebay.
Now I hope Daiwa will make a smaller finesse reel (like the Sol) with the same type brake system they have on the Tatula SV TW.

I wish Shimano still made the Chronarch 51mg.
The best reels I've ever used period!!!!!
