Falcon Lake Status - 09/28/17 01:06 PM

Alright guys if you've been keeping up with James FLT report you'll know that with all the rain in Mexico and in Laredo we've finally got some much needed water flowing down the Rio grand. Its safe to say that we have gotten more that 3 Feet by now.

We are sitting at 266.66, or 34.54 feet low.

So here a few pic of what its looking like down at falcon.

Yes, water is coming in fast from the Salado and the Rio Grand so there is plenty of debris in the water on top part of the lake.

Yes state park boat ramps are working.

Yes the old Veleno bridge is no longer visible

YESTERDAY

This is great news! Was just down there a few weeks ago and ol' Falcon was a sad sight to see. Hoping it rises more!

That's some Great news!! Falcon NEEDS water!!

Re: Falcon Lake Status - 09/28/17 01:39 PM

It will definitely rise more. Rio is running 43,000 cubic feet per second in Laredo. That water hasn't even gotten close to the lake yet.

Re: Falcon Lake Status - 09/28/17 03:45 PM

I'd take a guess at what we are going to catch.. But..

There is also a lot of water in the Salado river between us and Don Martin..

And that is a big variable I have no grip on.. No gauges over there..

But I think it is safe to say that we could catch another four or five feet.. Maybe more!!

We'll see!

Sure hope so, James. Been too long!

Re: Falcon Lake Status - 09/28/17 05:55 PM

Sad thing is that will only bring it up to last years level with Amistad being 9 feet lower than last year.

There were more boats at the dam when I got off work today than I've seen in a couple months!

Re: Falcon Lake Status - 09/29/17 11:43 AM

Caught three more feet yesterday. Probably at least 3 more feet in the river yet to come.

Re: Falcon Lake Status - 09/30/17 12:38 PM

Up nine feet! No can we hold it?
Posted By: leethefishking

Re: Falcon Lake Status - 09/30/17 01:04 PM

It's a foot higher than it was last year at this time so should have at least a year of water on state park ramp.

Re: Falcon Lake Status - 09/30/17 01:14 PM

The water demand should be slowing in the valley as we approach the Fall.. If there is such a thing down here..

We are up 10.16 feet since Tuesday morning.. We are still on a pretty good rise, but I see it slowing slightly this morning.. There is another push of water in the river still above Laredo..

We are at 273.26, and when it is all said and done, I believe we will settle out around 278 or so.. But that is just my guess.. It will take a week or longer till all the water reaches the lake.

It is still raining west of Eagle Pass.. And all that water will end up here.. If a little more rain falls we could make 280.

All the creeks and arroyos that that have had water pushed into them by the rising river will have to drain back into the river channel..

And provided that we don't dump any water, which I can't see happening, we should be catching water for at least the next ten days..

Lots of smiling faces in Zapata..

I took the kayak out for a few hours this afternoon and managed one dink.

The lake gained 13,000 acres in a week. Might have em spread out a bit.

Re: Falcon Lake Status - 10/11/17 02:43 AM

Boys I am sure that is a guage malfunction. . Happened when the front hit..Lots of times the big north winds screw up the guage.. no water loss in zapata..

I'm sure they will straighten it out soon..

Yall do me a favor and keep that water till after Christmas.

Re: Falcon Lake Status - 10/11/17 04:37 PM

Gauge corrected.. Current level 281.39..

Slowly rising..19.81 low..

Fishing on top of lake improving.. Water clearing up.. Rotting vegetation in some creeks the fish don't like.. But it is fading fast and the water in the backs of a lot of creeks, and the river near Veleno looking good.

Salanaias is doing well as are a lot of pockets on TX side south of Tigers..

Looking better every day.. Had near an inch of rain in Zapata yesterday with frontal passage..

I HAVE to get down there!

Re: Falcon Lake Status - 10/11/17 06:29 PM

I am thinking about heading down there and spending the days before and after Jan 1. How is the fishing that time of year usually? I have fished Falcon a ton but it has always been March through August.

I personally don't like January. Size is good but numbers suck. Falcon fish like warm water

Re: Falcon Lake Status - 10/11/17 08:46 PM

January is kinda tough to fish Falcon because the of the weather patterns. At least that's been my experience. If it were me, I'd go in mid-February or March, even April.

^^Go when you can and Enjoy it!! So many things- like weather- happen out of our control and you may have the best days even if it does! Don has a ton of knowledge about that lake so PM him if you get a chance.

Re: Falcon Lake Status - 10/12/17 10:15 PM

Jan depends on water temps. If you can time a temp rise into the 60's it can be lights out. Best I've seen it was Jan 2012 temps were high 50's but warmed into low mid 60's and the rock staging spots were ridiculous
