All mono created equally?

All mono created equally? - 08/19/17 12:49 AM

I used Stren when mono was all I fished with starting out but now that I either use Flouro or braid I haven't kept up with the different qualities throughout the various mono brands. I need to pick up some 17-20# for buzzbaits, treble hooked topwaters and such. Which do you prefer? Probably just end up using a 2-3 foot leader anyway so that I don't have to change the spool out every month but still...

Big game is good enough for me.
If somebody would invent a mono with less stretching and similar sensitivity to fluoro then I would buy that for sure.

Someone turned me onto Suffix Elite a few years ago. I find this line to have less memory and seems to be stronger than labeled test strength. Haven't used any other mono since spooling my first reel.

Try some McCoys Mean Green or Xtra Clear, right up your alley.

Mcoy's is very good in 15lb test and tough to beat for cranking/topwaters; but, the closest I've gotten to fluoro sensitivity in a mono is Pline CXX mono copoly
Also; CXX is less stretchy than Mcoy's. It does have more memory, so braid mainline solves that issue

Big Game 10, 12 and 15 # is what I use.

Big Game 20lb. I have to tie it off to a cleat and use the troll motor to break it when I hang up. Don't have a single reel that will lock down the drag tight enough to break the 20lb. Even if it would, I don't want to put that much pressure on the spools of my $200 reels.

I prefer Sunline Super Natural as it last the longest. I just don't like Berkley Trilene Big Game.

McCoys mean green is my first choice. It's a co-poly I believe.

Absolutely nothing wrong with Stren. I have used it for decades, and it has always performed.

Big Game and it's cheap enough to keep it changed regularly

No, they're not created equally. Big Game's fine, but kinda stiff. If you want the very best... Maxima Ultragreen.

Suffix Siege works well for me. They have a ProMix line that seems to have more "feel" to it as well.

I went back to Big Game a several months ago. It's the last time I will use it. I've lost more fish in the last few months than I have in the last few years and the memory coils drive me crazy. I'll pay a couple dollars more and go back to P line CXX when i change it out soon.

This is correct.

P Line CX Premium is also a good line.

All three are actually co-polymer lines.

If you are looking for a monofilament line only, I would choose Big Game, but I prefer McCoys, or either of the P Line products over Big Game. Big Game is good line, but I think the other 3 are better and with that they are also a little more expensive than Big Game but a lot less than fluorocarbon line.
