Tiger Bass! Anyone know much about them?

I learned about them in June. They are just awesome. They will out pull a regular bass by a lot and they seem to always jump and they jump much higher than regular bass that usually don't clear the water even if they do jump. I read about the hatchery that developed the strain and I expect they are doing well financially. I understand they are pretty expensive.

Unfortunately for me the small lake that was loaded with them had a hundred year flood and the big majority of these fish went over the spillway.

I wish there was a way for fishermen to donate to a fund to buy them for our favorite lakes. I know I'd put in a few bucks!

Pure Floridas cross with northerns in our public lakes. I'd guess 95% of the LMB in Texas are some level of intergrade.

I had a client in the IT business that was part of a private lake community in NE Texas. Can't recall the name of the lake but they had 2 different lakes on the property. He told me they had stocked it with the Tiger Bass. At that time I did some research and what really got my attention were the "Gorilla Bass". If I remember, that is where they took the Tiger's and bred them to pure Florida's. The idea was they would be super aggressive and grow big.

I wonder if they have ever stocked those fish anywhere.

Had a buddy back in MS that's a forestry consultant for the state. He had a pond stocked with strictly F1's caught several 3 pounders that would pretty much jerk the rod out of your hand fishing soft plastics. They are what they advertise.

Just read the same thing Chris. The weird thing is the company's website only mentions Tiger Bass and not Gorilla. But when you read the description of the Tiger Bass its what they described in that article as Gorillas. I'm going to call them. We bought a new ranch last year and it's got a 10+ acre pond on it. My brother and I have talked about stocking it with both more bait and bass. I may go this route.

F1s already in our n Texas lakes and they get big.

To add to what others have said...

Marketing hype. They are 50% Florida and 50% Northern (native) bass. People in the fisheries industry call them F1 hybrids, meaning first generation cross of Florida/native genetics. There are "Tiger Bass" in every lake in Texas that has had Florida bass introduced to mix with the natives.

They are not expensive, and are a good option for pond stocking if you are looking for all around fishing (good numbers, decent size). If you are looking to grow the biggest bass possible, you will want to stick with pure Florida genetics, though. If you are looking for pure numbers, northern (natives) would be better. F1s fall in between the two. More aggressive than a pure Florida, but bigger max size than a native.

The name "Tiger Bass" is 100% a marketing gimmick.
