What size braid are yall throwing on your frogs/ toads? I have never used braid but have been learning the importance of it.

65 pound test works very well.
50 pound breaks too easily in thick stuff.

50 lb. You're not breaking braid. Your knot may slip, but you won't break it.

65# for sure especially in the really thick stuff.

40 or 50 only have 65 on my punching set up. Im big on cracking them and holding on a frog not trying to drag them out just go to them

40 is pleanty. makes casting must better. 65 is overkill
if you break 40lb braid then the braid is [censored]

Yes I can. It was Power Pro. My knots do not slip.
I switched from 50# test to 65 and haven't broken off since then.

Or it could be you aren't very strong if you can't break 40# braid.
I use 80, No reason to let them have any advantage.

Re: What Size Braid - 07/21/17 07:21 PM
I use 65# braid... 50# does a much better job of cutting through the grass or cover and just slicing it out-of-the-way, but I have broken 50 pound braid many times on either the hookset or trying to get a fish out of the junk. Some of the casts I make, going in and getting them is not an option. Well unless you fire up the big motor and hammer it for a couple of bursts.

65#
To the argument that others give saying 50# is strong enough: Yes, in perfect-world pure strength it probably is. But, in frog fishing, there is more risk of physical damage to the line occurring, at which point it's breaking point is reduced. A 65# line is mechanically larger than a comparable 50# line, so the 65# line can get abused by the environment we subject it to a bit more before it's breaking point drops down to within the range that makes it fail as we frog fish.

65 for me....been my experience that anything below 50,if you have a backlash with a casting rod,the plug is gonna keep going...I've got 20lb on couple spinning rods that works well with flouro leader....

Imagine the empty feeling as an angler watches a $100 sinking swimbait sail through the air after a wind knot stopped line flow in it's tracks..... which is why smart swimbait fishermen use really stout braid also - even more than 65# at times.

Maybe I'm just a limp wristed pansy but I have 40# on all my rods with braid and have never broken one off. Problem with braid is people think its indestructible and never retie thenknots.

If you are fishing open water with nothing to get hung up on you can get away with lighter # braid but if you are fishing thick cover and big bass you need 65# test or above.
I use 20# test on a spinning rod for drop shotting and ned rigging but 65# for throwing hollow body frogs in thick cover.

Or they use really heavy mono line.

Spro 65 for buoyancy
Buzzfrog 50 for casting distance
Punching 30-40 for getting more bites.
If you don't have a huge hook set none should break. Braid can't handle a shock load.

Ok if I am using 65lb braid ... how often do you re-spool to keep it "fresh" ?

When it gets too short to cast.

For frogs, I use 20-30# on open water or sparse cover, as that's the line I use with most of my other techniques. If there's some heavy slop and grass, go up to 50. You should probably consider 65# if you primarily fish around pads, but I haven't found the need. As for how often you have to respool, braid doesn't really have memory or go bad in the heat, so I've got some braid on my reels that have been there for well past a year.
