Who is Steve Kennedy?

Who is Steve Kennedy? - 06/13/17 08:21 PM

I know Steve is a phenomenal fisherman, but what makes him tick? He has few sponsors, yet competes year after year. How does he do it financially without sponsors? Is he a self made, wealthy person? Seems like a very humble and stand up guy, which is why I respect him.

Is he on the Wall Of Shame?

Is he from Marshall?

Re: Who is Steve Kennedy? - 06/13/17 09:09 PM

From what I can gather is that he was an Engineer with a true, natural talent for fishing that has fished a lot of tournaments and won a lot of money to keep himself going...was happy to see him win at Dardanelle. The bassfan article below has they why behind the no sponsor's. He makes more money on the water than off of it.

I think his family time is more important than having too be on road to boat shows. fish

From what I understand $ is not a problem for that family so sponsors are not a big deal.

Here is a well-made documentary film (53 minutes) about the man. Even my wife enjoyed it.

The guy is on a different level most calm guy when hooking into a big fish just go watch videos he just lets them swim and taking them to open water. Insane with a swim jig pretty impressive he does it with minimal sponsors

Re: Who is Steve Kennedy? - 06/14/17 01:16 AM

One of the best. Got to like a guy that can win a major in a 10 year old 18' boat with a 150 on it and he still uses reels made in the 90s.
Dude is a rock star to me.

Dude slept in a tent for years and pulled his old boat with a Ford Ranger. If his family has money he didnt live that way in the early 2000s

and when he does good and win he acts just like a kid that just got handed a bag of candy and doesn't seem to take it for granted he didn't even have power poles till the day before the classic he said. He seems to be a great family guy and has fun whether he wins or loses and catches or not.

Solid guy, 100% class act

Re: Who is Steve Kennedy? - 06/14/17 12:11 PM

known him and his dad (Van) since early 80's.his dad qualified for the classic back in the 80's through bass federation.....both class acts, very good fishermen and real credit to our sport....
I drew Steve in a redman(bfl) back in the 80's when he was just a teenager....he almost won the tournament from back of my boat....he was throwing an old raggedy buzzbait that wouldn't run right, kept falling over on it's side but every now and then a 6lb bass would grab it...
Steve and his wife would sleep in a tent back in his early years of tournament fishing so I'm pretty sure what money steve has,he has won or earned.....

The part of the documentary where he talks about the Yamaha motor is hilarious. Good for him.

Re: Who is Steve Kennedy? - 06/14/17 02:28 PM

He is proof that you don't need all the hype and brand new equipment to fish for a living.
He drives a 2004 or 2005 Chevy dually.
His BassCat is not brand new.
He has 7" screen electronics on that BassCat.
And he did not have Power Poles until the Classic on Conroe, they rigged his boat with the poles during Classic practice.

Awesome guy, humble and an all out hoot to be around!

I watched a good bit of that video just now. Seems real down to earth, love how he covers up Yamaha with duct tape. Also loved listening to him about the bass tracker and winning out of it so much. Just a real good fisherman though, thats for sure. Surprised he did not win the classic!

Here is my take, echoing what others have said -- he does what is best for his career and his family, totally about substance over image

His love of Auburn plus his lack of sponsors. The blue is to blend in to the sky.

I really enjoy watching him fish, I was watching him live and he would talk to the spectator boats by him like they was his best friend. Really good guy, and have yall noticed what kinda reels he uses? The old school Green Curado Bantam. I think that's pretty cool.
