Swimbait Reel

I'm planning on putting together a swimbait outfit for the larger variety baits. I mostly use Curado I series reels, and was wondering if I can switch one of them over to my swimbait rod, or if I truly need a beefier reel. If I really do, what would some choices be?

Calcutta 400b is hard to beat for big baits.

The new Shimano Tranx is a bada$$ reel. Either that or see if you can still find a Curado 300.

Butch Brown uses a Calcutta 400 which is good enough for me.

I want to give this Lew's one a try whenever my BB2HZ gives up the ghost - 3 years & still going.

I use a Lews Super Duty Wide Spool, works great.

I use a Lews BB1. Just like the extra line capacity.

Curado 300 is a great real for bigger swimbaits. You need a reel built for them or you will tear up a regular reel (200 series or less) sooner rather than later. Calcuttas are great as well but I think 300s are more than enough for our Texas waters vs the 400s. Those Cali guys fish saltwater and big stripers and troll a lot which is the reason for the bigger spools I believe. But either will do the trick.

I really like my Revo Beast. Oversized handles, very smooth and handles 25lb line with no issues.

One of the advantages of the Calcutta 400 over the Curado 300 is the wider spool. When you make a long cast with heavy line with a 300, the diameter of the spool decreases to the point that the amount of line recovered per handle turn is decreased noticeably. You don't have that problem with the 400.

Thanks for the input! The 400b seems reasonably priced for an outfit I (probably) won't use every trip.

I use a Daiwa Luna 253 and love it. http://www.tackletour.com/reviewdaiwaluna.html Rivera Tackle on the TFF here gave me a better than retail deal too. https://www.riveratackle.com/ You can get the larger 300 model but the "medium" 253 is still comfortable to palm/cast all day and holds way more than enough line to sling a big swimbait a mile.
