Drop shot worm

Drop shot worm - 11/21/16 12:35 AM

Ok,finesse fishing is not something I am accustomed to. I have a drop shot rod and reel but I was wondering what y'all's opinion on a drop shot worm was or drop shot bait in general.
It is very much appreciated.

My favorite is Robo worm straight tail

Re: Drop shot worm - 11/21/16 12:49 AM

I like the xcite slim x on account of its buoyancy. I fish them on 12# braid with A 6' flouro leader. I like using a 1/0 worm hook and trig the worm. Saves a lot of headaches as far as snags. The stretch from the leader along with the softer action of a ds rod balances out well against the braid for a thin wire hookset. Justdont try to break their jaw. a swift 9 to 12 lift of the rod against a taught line will do the job.

It depends on what the fish want, sometimes it is watermelon colors, sometime red colors, sometimes purple colors at least that is what works for me at Fork. It also depends on water clarity and if it is sunny or cloudy.

Lately I have been drop shoting trick worms and V&M pork pins (the longer ones) although I still keep a second drop shot rod rigged up with a finesse worm also on deck at all times.

Re: Drop shot worm - 11/21/16 07:08 PM

I love a good drop shot set up, I like to use Berkley bottom hopper 4" or 6" worm either nose hooked or wacky, also I like putting soft plastic swim baits like minnow or shad, just nose hook em and maybe bounce them around a little more. I have seen people do an interesting set up where it was a bigger hook and would put a craw or creature bait on a drop shot...I guess give the fish something they haven't seen before and they might be more likely to bite.

Re: Drop shot worm - 11/22/16 01:53 AM

Lots of good information here.. no question Robo's catch fish.. just hate that its usually 1 and done as far as fish catching goes. I nose hook and usually the fish slings the bait before I get it in the boat. I have switched over to Zoom finesse and have good luck with Yum Houdini worms. Colors that have been good for me are Red Shad (xoom finesse) and Houdini.. which is a green with glitter. Another good bait is the Yamamoto Shad Shaped Worm. White and watermelon red flake are great colors on those baits. Wacky rigging those baits is a great way to drop shot. I use 30lb braid and about 10-12' of 12lb Invisix flouro leader.. just because I break off a lot.. saves retying leaders. The knot I used to connect the leader to the braid is an improved Albright.. great knot for joining braid to leader.

I've grown to like the Dream Shot. http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Strike_King_KVD_Dream_Shot_10pk/descpage-SKKDS.html I've done pretty well with KVD magic.
Today, I make my own in a custom color that has produced pretty well.

Re: Drop shot worm - 11/22/16 07:10 PM

Robos are no-brainers and others are good, too, at least on the issue of durability, likely not better attracting fish though.

I would only add that I have had days where I couldn't catch them on a roboworm, and I have had good luck switching to a small 3" Keitech Easy Shiner.

My point is not to promote Keitech, but just to mention it might be a good idea to have an alternative form of bait, something that mimics a shad for example.

Robos are great in Aarons magic, MMIII,and morning dawn red but there is one that is better and it isn't made by Robo.

Re: Drop shot worm - 11/25/16 04:40 AM

I bought some kicker baits high tail hole shot off a tackle warehouse sale a couple years ago and have not looked back. They come in all the colorstuff you need and the scent is magical. Open up a bag and you can smell the garlic from a mile away. I've caught many a big fish on the 7" watermelon purple. Just don't leave them in your truck with the bag open in the dead heat of summer. Your truck will smell like a funky batch of garlic bread for days.

ZZ Worms has a 4" shaker worm that is similar to the robo worm. they float and are garlic injected. they also have a line of floating minnow/shad worms. they are killer on carolina and drop shot
