First time for everything

First time for everything - 11/03/16 02:05 AM

In all my years I've never done this but I broke a hook in half today. Fishing a drop shot and saw my line headed to the back of the boat...set the hook and snap. Thought my line snapped but there was the hook shank still tied on. Oh well, at least my knot held. roflmao

Did you bend it hung up and bend it back before hand, I have seen that happen several times before when it's been bent and bent back.

Only thing that makes sense.

I throw spinnerbaits all the time , usually it's a 1/2oz strike king premier plus model , if you catch about 20-25 bass on the same one , and you end up having to bend the spinnerbait body back to it's proper shape , you'll end up breaking them in half and it's usually on a bigger fish , I have come back with only the blades tied on and the body/hook still hooked on the one that got away .

Had it happen on a hook that I'd previously bent back into shape with pliers.

No, it had not been bent before. Matter of fact is was a fairly new hook. Probably just had an unseen flaw in it. I normally don't set a hook hard when drop shot fishing but when I saw that line taking off across the lake I got a little excited. ha!

The little tiny drop shot hooks, some of them, are heat treated to make them stronger. Bad thing about heat treating is it also makes them brittle. Stronger to a certain point....then snap instead of bending easily with less force.

Awww come on guys! Give him the GLORY! He had a HOG Share Lunker on and it broke his hook. Since he didn't see it then it must have been a double digit. OR maybe even that 20lb'er that the other thread is looking for!!! roflmao

Thanks Bigron, I wasn't going to mention it but it did jerk my boat around the other direction when I set the hook! roflmao roflmao
