cranking setup - 09/07/16 05:48 PM

got a new cranking rod, powell 7'5 mod-fast. Gonna be using it for mainly lv-500s and squarebills. been looking at different options for reels than I normally do (I love curados and chronachs). What are yall's favorite reel set ups for cranking .

I use a G. Loomis CBR 843C with a Shimano Core 101mg. That's a sweet setup right there.

For deep cranking I really like the Revo Winch (I have mine on a 7'11 winch series veritas). It makes throwing a 10XD feel like throwing a squarebill. Sometimes it' so smooth it even confuses me and makes me think that the crankbait isn't working right.

I have two Orra Winch reels. I got the first one almost two years ago and I have been so happy with it that I decided to go with another one for my deep cranking.

For throwing rattle baits, I like the Curado 7.1:1 gear ratio. You can rip it loose and ctake up slack very quickly. I used to sue a Revo S on it, but that broke and now I use an old greenie Curado 200 SF. The 7.1 or 7.0:1 gives you more capacity to cover ground more quickly On all my other CB rods I use the old greenie 200B5s with great results, but for the rattle baits, I like something a lot quicker. I use a 5.1:1 gear ratio for my square bills, but most people use faster reels for that. Hope this helps. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

I like short rods(6'10") for cranking squarebills and use Quantum EXO(6:1) More target related technique for me. My deep cranker setup is 7'11" rod and with a Tatula HD 6:1.

I also have a Powell 7'5" mod fast matched with a Lew's BB1 Pro. Great set up and can throw it a mile. I use this for 6XDs as well.

Lews BB1 5-1 gear ratio for deep divers on a Dobyns Champion 805 and one on a Duckett 7-11 cranking rod.
Lews Super Duty 5.4-1 on a Duckett 7-6 cranking rod for mid runners
Lews Super Duty 6-1 on a Powell 705 Max 3D for top waters and square bills.

Shimano Curado E 7-1 gear ratio on a Powell 705 Max 3D for lipless baits and buzz baits.

I have the powell 705 and my absolute favorite reel on it is the Lew's tournament lite. It's a tough reel and it casts light cranks a mile but it doesn't weigh much at all. I have one on my powell 6104 too and they don't quit.
I use the 6104 for small squarebills and rip baits or "jerk baits" as ya'll call them out here.
the 705 is used for lipless cranks, smaller deep divers, and 2.5 or bigger square bills.
