My anchor somehow came unclipped...

My anchor somehow came unclipped... - 09/07/16 02:20 PM

I had a small 10lb mushroom anchor for my jon boat, and went to pull it up the other day to find an empty carabiner clip at the end of the rope.

Nonetheless, I still caught some nice bass: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VidiqPf-6Xw

I already bought a new anchor and this time I'll tie directly to the rope with a bowline knot. Anyone have any idea how it could have come off? Also, how to make sure it doesn't happen again?

Thanks guys!

It just happens, the gates on those clips provided on most anchor ropes are junk. Mine has a real locking carabiner on it, problem solved.

That'll work for this winter. The yetis will die off in the summer right? I don't want a population boom

I had that happen years ago. I now have a float on the line about 5 ft from the end I tie to the boat. If it comes off at least there is a float I can grab to pull it back in.

The problem with this one is that the clip came off the anchor itself. So I pulled the rope up and there was no anchor on the end

Use a chain link that screws shut and don't lose any more anchors.

You think it would be better to tie the rope directly to the anchor or is the link necessary?

I would tie direct using an anchor knot thumb peep

Thanks for that! My usual go-to knot when I need something super secure is the bowline, but I'll try this one for the anchor.

Here's another look at the anchor bend knot. I think the lashing on the tag end is dental floss. Optional I figure.

Buy a rope thimble and clamp. Will not wear at the tie point and don't have to be a retired 30 sailor to tie it. dance2
