Joe Pool Lake - 08/21/16 04:51 PM

I was wondering if any one knows how to get to the back of Walnut Creek on Joe Pool Lake; or even if it is possible?

Yes, you can easily run up Walnut Creek nearly to Highway 360. Look on Google maps. Simple run the right bank up past Lloyd Park. As it gets stumpy/shallow simply start idling and you will see a seldom used courtesy/fishing dock on the right bank. Hang a 90 degree left turn here to the opposite(left) bank and enter the river/creek. Well defined creek that you can easily enter(on idle). Always depends on trees down as to how far upstream you can go. Go by kayak and you can go for miles. Just look at on Google Maps and it will make sense.

Ok thanks I tried to get in the creek yesterday only managed to get a little pass the mouth of the creek. I have a Nitro-7 it started to get real shallow and stumpy so I turned around. I figured with all this rain and fresh water I could catch them in the back of the creek.

Are you sure that you turned left just at the courtesy dock? There's a buoy in the creek. If you go too far there's a turn that looks like the creek but that's not where you want to go.

It shouldn't have been to shallow. The creek channel runs around 10' deep and is easily navigated by boat at idle speed. You can go quite a ways back but there is a huge pile of logs and debris which a little harder to get around but it is pretty close to 360.

The Courtesy dock sits right on the right side of the cove entrance along the Loyd Park bank once you get here look for the bank on the other side of the cove and the entrance to Walnut Creek starts @ the right of it.It was kinda tricky during the flood conditions because the high h2o took away the reference points and you had to use your electronics to get in there.

Be careful and just idle crossing the cove entrance until you get into the creek.

I will try again probably today I probably just wasn't in the creek channel but I was in the right spot. Another thing I was trying to troll in there I'll try idling and following my graph. How is the fishing back there guys?

My guess is that's it's muddy. I haven't been down there in over a year I think. Sometimes after a rain it is milk chocolate. I was out there yesterday fishing off shore all day. It has been tough our deep for me the last 2 or 3 weeks.

I don't fish it much any more. Was a good place on windy days just to get out of the wind. You'll find a lot of bank fishermen all the way down it. Mainly crappy fishing. There are some bass and sand bass in there but I've never caught much and they aren't very big. Was really muddy last time I tried it. I've caught more bass and larger bass in the creek outside of the Loyd park ramp.

I went about a mile into it today. I was a basscat pantera. Very muddy, I only fished a stretch of about 100 yds, no luck for me. I went to find clearer water. I hit probably 8-10 stumps on the way back.

Caught this nice one way up Walnut before the last flood. Fishing was pretty good up there for a while. Went to check it out a couple weeks ago as the lake was returning to normal levels and it was not the same. Muddy, no baitfish anywhere, water covered on top with cottonwood tree fuzz...just looked bad. Didn't give it much of a chance and got out of the creek without a bite. Earlier this year it was great...but not a secret! Motoring up here is easy. Just follow the instructions/pics above, trim the motor up a little and idle in. 21' bass boat all the time with no problem. Sounds like you passed the entrance to the creek and just went to the back of that cove. It is very stumpy and very shallow there. Post your results!

Why? There is no need to go up there. Haha. Way better, and more fish in the area around Loyd.

Actually Walnut Creek is part of the "area around Lloyd Park". People bank fish that entire creek nearly to Highway 360 by accessing it through Lloyd Park. Spring time will have bank fishermen lining the banks. But I get what you mean: better fishing on main lake.
