If i wanted a really high end travel rod, I would rather take the 3 piece GLX for 700 or whatever.
I don't understand this post

For striped bass and red drum (aka red fish)
Back around 1984 at that time we were mainly surf fishing and a guy was demonstrating a brand new technology called graphite rods.
But we thought it was just another fad so we didn't bother to buy one. The long cast contest boys latched onto them rather quickly and were breaking windows with them right off. By breaking windows I mean that their long distance casting contests were usually held on high school football fields of 100 yards using the traditional fiberglass rods and conventional reels with no internal magnets. 250 feet would be a really long cast.
These first graphite's were breaking the school windows and they had to find longer stretches of open fields to do their contests in.
So while we were fishing on the Core Banks in North Carolina we ran into the guy who held the record for the pendulum cast at something like 436 feet using one of these graphite's. So I ordered 2. One 12 footer for me and a 11 foot for Cheryl.
At that time, 1985, $450 each was a sizable sum for a surf pole. Afterwards we had some training on doing the pendulum cast and after managing not to hit the folks fishing down the beach away's and actually get it to go straight out in the water we did reach sizable distances.
