Tungsten with or without insert????

Tungsten with or without insert???? - 07/11/16 12:58 AM

Never really gave this much thought until today......Had one break off on the hookset. Punching with 65lb braid and it was just gone. I know this is due to fraying of the braid, but it made me question my weights. Don't remember the brand I'm using, but I wanted to know what you guys have the most faith in. Insert vs no insert. I use everything from 3/8 to 2oz. What can I do to not have this happen again???
Thanks in advance.

I like the ones from APT in NRH with no insert. Never had a problem with them.

No insert. Insert means it typically doesn't have a milled edge and will cut braid quickly if insert fails

No insert, but...In this order:

Peg X stopper, tungsten weight, brass Carolina Clacker disk, snelled hook.

Tungsten will beat up braid, flouro, or mono.

Why take chances?

I recently tried this with my weights and it seems to work well. Might be worth a try.

No insert. But if you are using 65 lb braid I would bet your knot failed.

My thoughts

But a snell knot will help if you're punching. Plus it makes the hook pop out when butted up against the bottom of the weight.

I prefer an insert on my weights 1oz and larger; the weight seems to stay in place better for me. Most guys seem to like a quality non insert weight. Get both and do some testing with each, you'll find out which one you like better.

Might want to take a few moments and read/watch what I posted on another thread

I use rubber pegs and weights without inserts. No problems with breaking line. The rubber peg hits the knot and the weight never does. The only time I ever had line problems with tungsten was when we got the bright idea to drill out the inserts in a few weights because we couldn't find any without inserts.

With insert. I have had too many instances where the non-insert will cut/or rub the weight. Not just the knot.
Even Aaron Martens shows how to add them.

if you go with an insert don't do like I did and buy a cheaper brand , the inserts pulled out and the rough hole left would mess up my line pretty quick, I tried to polish the hole ,but it did not work very well ,that tungsten is very hard..
