I was at lake fork Tuesday and while I was idling through some timber I hit a submerged stump like normal but this time my entire engine shut off and I was unable to restart it. after messing around with the batteries and checking the wires I trimmed up the motor completely and watched a brown liquid come out but as soon as I put the motor back down it started up fine and has been working perfectly ever since. any ideas what it could have been?
Brown liquid came out of where? Exhaust?

top of the lower unit it looked like
You ruptured a seal letting that lube escape under pressure. It will be a mater of time before you damage it farther. I would have the lower unit serviced and all seals replaced including the shaft seal. Better safe than sorry.

Letting out the brown liquid is equivalent to letting the smoke out of an electrical device.
Meaning, after the brown crud poured out and the motor cranked back up and ran fine, he ran at high RPM's without oil in lower unit?
