help on Cypress

One of my clients is letting me and my wife use their lake house at Cypress Springs this next weekend. I dont ever fish this lake. Any help would be appreciated. PM me if you like.

Usually can't beat brush hogs on docks for numbers

I had a home there for a few years and learned the lake pretty well. Spring time on Cypress is a great time to fish that lake. There are several ways to catch numbers.

For years and years spring time on Cypress meant red rattle traps. We used to rip them through the grass and really hammer the fish. Move fast and chunk and wind red rattle traps. If the water is murky go with the green/orange rattle trap. They're ugly baits most people wouldn't even consider but I'm telling you they catch bass on Cypress. If you use rattle traps accept up front you will lose some fish. If you want to reduce your losses change out the rear treble to one the same size as the front. I have found this helps and if you use a thin gauge treble it don't change the tuning of the bait any. Rattle Traps on cypress in the spring is probably my first choice for numbers. Now days there are so many choices for other crank baits but a good ol rattle trap would be hard to beat I guarantee you.

Spring time I also like to use spinner baits. Color depends on water clarity. I always had good luck with the 1/4 oz terminator spinner bait white skirt with red head and hook and gold blades. I also like the red and gold spinner bait made by war eagle. Anything with a little red in the spring was always a rule of thumb I used and it worked.

Red shad color texas rigged worms also work well. Always have a texas rig on the deck. If you get a short hit on a spinner or a rattle trap pick up your texas rig as quickly as possible and throw it to where the bite happened. That fish is looking to feed and will usually take the worm.

If the water is fairly clear spring fishing Cypress Springs also offers some great sight fishing. It's not hard to find spawning areas. IF you like the challenge of getting a big ol sow to take your bait Cypress is a good lake for that. A creature type bait or lizard in watermelon red will serve you well. Black power worms texas rigged will work well too.

Just fished Cypress this last weekend. Also fished it two weeks ago. Two weeks ago we caught them on chartreuse and white spinnerbaits and chatterbiats. A few on a fluke. Almost no fish around docks. All in the grassy shallows.

This past weekend all fish were caught on a weightless fluke. A lot of fish were in the water between the grass and shorline. You can't throw too shallow. Worked very slow, and boat had to be way back from the fish. If we got too close to the bank/fish, they wouldn't bite. If there wasn't grass/reeds or something similar, we didn't bother. The bite was very soft. You really have to watch the line. Sometimes just a light tick can be felt, and more times than not it's on the drop as the bait hits the water. Many times nothing at all was felt and the line never moved, that we saw. They were just there. What worked best was to basically throw up on the bank, or right at it, drag the bait into the grass, and they would hit in the grass, or as we lightly pulled it through the grass. Don't jerk it out of the grass though. This last weekend the South side and the West end of the lake fished best. Opposite of two weeks ago for us. Fish also seemed to turn off and on throughout the day. We would catch several in a short span, and then nothing for a bit, and then back on again.

Hope this helps. Cypress has always been good for numbers for me. Sometimes struggle to find big bites, but you should be able to catch some numbers, at the very least.

Well I was back on Cypress this afternoon getting ready to fish tomorrow. Water is up, stained and 78 to 80 degrees. NO BITES!
Any idea where they have gone, must be post spawn with those temps.

I also fished a tournament there last weekend and the bass fishing is really tough and you really have to work hard for them like Gibby said. Caught a couple in the grass flipping baits.
One thing if you want to have fun that we did have a lot of success at is Carolina rigging for the Kentuckys. Me and the guy I was with backed off in some area's and off points and must have caught 50 Kentuckys on LFT Baby Fork Creatures. Not a keeper out of all of those fish but in about 4 area's all over the lake as soon as we backed off and started fishing we would start getting bit. Even though we were there to fish the tournament it did make for a fun day to fool with those small fish. I would love to go back soon just to fish that way with my grandkids.

The shad spawn is in FULL swing out there. during that time each year the fish will be loaded around docks and anything the shad can spawn on. I was out crappie fishing last weekend when I saw them on every boat dock and the bridge pilings. Fish that type of structure with whatever you want to fish and you should find some bass.

Caught 13 this morning (2 sand bass). Most on a square bill shallow. Before sunup the top water was fun but quit with sunrise.
