1991 Ranger 362v opinions - 04/07/16 11:47 PM

Im looking at buying a 91 Ranger 362v in good condition. Its very clean and kept in a building, it has a 90 model Johnson GT150. What are somethings I should look for on boat and motor? What are issues as far as fishibility, driving or handling, storage? My last Boat was 2000 Skeeter zx202c, I know theres no comparison between the two, but just ideas. Thanks.

Nice boat at 17'10". It was their pro boat at the time and the 461 replaced it. I like single consoles myself but if you've seen it you know it has the second console on it.
The GT150 is reliable but a gas guzzler. If you don't go far on the lake you won't notice.

I had that same setup only a 1988 model. Boat was great, little rough riding in windy conditions, motor was strong but as Allison1 said a gas guzzler.

I run a 1992 362V with a 93 Johnson Fast Strike. Loves gas.

It fishes very well for the size. It is still in very good shape and it is very stable to drive. Will run high 50's with two guys full of fuel and livewells. I would recommend adding a 6" jackplate if it doesn't have one. I added a Bob's Jack plate and it helped the performance. Hole shot is good.

You will get wet in the boat from spray and if the waves are up it doesn't do real well.

Biggest downside for me is rod storage. The rod boxes are short so I put them all on the deck or behind the passenger console.

I have a 92 Fast Strike and the gas thing is true but it is a solid engine! Pushes my 18'6" Javelin at 62 with me and a full tank. Gas mileage is MUCH better at 4500 rpm. if you are not in a hurry.

I had one, great fishing platform for 1 or 2 people. Quality construction. I think 1991 was the first year for the all composite transoms. Sits low and escapes some of the wind. Great for getting in the woods and bushes in high water. Great in shallow situations.

I fished Rayburn out of one for 14 years when I was younger and braver and it is not a rough water boat but I have been through a few storms in it and it got me home.

Mine had the 'Rude XP ... essentially the same as the Johnny GT. I didn't like it, I found it sluggish. I repowered after 3-4 years with an Evinrude Intruder and liked it much better. I put a 6" jackplate on and the setback helped performance too.

Get the boat.

Agreed. My dad bought it new. I'm the second owner. It has many hundreds or thousands of hours on it without any significant trouble.

Definitely get that motor checked out completely. Regardless of brand it's still a 26 year old outboard...

I have a 364V and I love it! I've taken a couple waves over the bow, but it fishes great if you're not in some big rollers.

Had a 361 and it was a tank, only reason I sold it was to get into a bigger boat.

Even if it checks out, it's still a 26 year old outboard.... My old Intruder was great until it wasn't.

Until a couple years ago I had an absolutely pristine 20+ year old 1992 Ranger 361V with a 1992 Johnson Fast Strike 150. All the original tuck-n-roll upholstery and everything. Always stored inside and it was still beautiful. Those were quality/tough boats. Today everyone argues about who makes the best boat...not back then. These were the best you could buy. Mine got taken out on the freeway early one morning. Trailer bent like a horseshoe, boat slid down the freeway off the trailer, motor ripped off the back... I moved on but I "gifted" the boat to a friend. Its still fishing today! Needed new mounts for motor, skeg work, major trailer repair and a little cosmetic fiberglass work. Not a single stress crack or even spiderweb on the transom! Great boats. My Johnson Fast Strike was also bullet-proof. It was NEVER in the shop in 20 years. I would not be hesitant to purchase one if it was a good deal. Look the boat over inside and out. What you see is what you get. I would spend a few dollars letting a mechanic check out the motor if you do not feel qualified to do so. Good luck!
