Boat gel coat cleaners...

Boat gel coat cleaners... - 03/25/16 05:55 PM

I bought a can of silicone lube spray for $3.00 last night at HD. Based on a friends recommendation that silicone is what the majority of these cleaners use. I told him he had to be kidding, but he stated the majority of the cleaners are about marketing and profit. I'm going to see if this is correct and I will report back with pics. I've checked out the SDS sheet on the spray and various other companies and for the most part he is completely accurate in his statement. He also stated silicone was waterproof and will keep the shine longer. Anyone try this method before? He stated it works on all plastic and rubber as well. Looks like a one can does it all deal. I'll report back this evening. Thanks!

I don't know about all that but I've always used FSR (fiberglass stain remover) which you can get at Academy for around $5 if I'm not mistaken. Works wonders and seems to protect the gel coat fairly well.

Toilet bowl cleaner or shower tile cleaner with a sponge works wonders!

Triton says don't use silicone based products on the vinyl or it will make it crack. One of several products it recommends is Aerospace 303 protectant on the vinyl and gel coat. I use it on my boat and also my tires. (Armorall is a no no also.)

I looked up some of the info you gave based on tritons website and some info I've been getting from others and here's a good breakdown of some misconceptions...might have to read down a bit...thanks!

We are talking strictly silicone....taking a look at SDS sheets from manufacturers that claim to shine up, the majority have silicone as one of their main ingredients or the key ingredient for shine.

I'm in the camp of "won't put that [censored] on anything I own".

Oil is for cooking and sunburns. Neither of which I want to add to something I'd like to protect.

Just use a soap and water. And a wax.

I own a 20 year old boat and have been battling the oxidation with every method possible the last 5 years. I finally found a product that brought the sparkle back to my gel coat and fleck! I ordered Rostolem "color back" from an infomercial. My gel coat looks awesome and my boat look 10 years Newer smile.
