The Conroe collision last year was at night, not two bass boats, and not head on. The borrowed pleasure boat was reportedly not illuminated and had children aboard without life jackets. Two or three drowned in that one. The pleasure boat driver had no experience, but had 10+ people aboard. The bass boat operator had decades of experience on the lake and a spotless record. Of course there were public rumblings of trying to charge him, but I believe no violation was found upon which to base any charge. He's probably got lots of civil trouble, though.

From the Conroe/Montgomery County newspaper site:

Staff report
A 65-year-old man died after the fishing boat he was on collided with another fishing boat on Lake Conroe early Saturday morning.
According to information from the Montgomery County Hospital District around 7:56 a.m. dispatchers received a 911 call reporting a boat collision on the north end of the lake near Scott’s Ridge Road.
When emergency workers arrived on scene, bystanders had pulled the man from the water and were performing CPR. Crews continued life-saving measures but around 8:35 a.m. pronounced the man dead.
The man has not been identified pending notification of family.
Witnesses on the scene reported there are two fishing tournaments on the lake Saturday but it was not clear if those involved in the accident were participating in the tournaments.
No other details were available.

I hate to hear stories like these. No tournament money is worth this happening just to get a few minutes more fishing time.
Try being out there on a kayak knowing you can't escape if someone is bearing down on ya.
Lake Conroe is the reason I have a house at Lake Sam Rayburn.

I was about 200 yards from where this happened. It sounded like the loudest thunder strike you could imagine.
Scotts ridge boat ramp is a very dangerous area. The public boat ramp has a small no wake zone that is very close to the main boat lane for caney Creek. People just launching their boats float backwards k to the boat lane a lot of times.
I don't believe this accident had anything to do with launching of the boat ramp, but it's still a dangerous area.

My thoughts and prayers for all involved. I have fished this lake since there was a temporary dam on the river. It was not inhabited much back then. There is no tournament worth dying for. I still fish the lake but stay very aware of my surroundings. Please everybody be careful.
Yes, I'm an old fart.

Sad deal. I've seen that Bass Cat boat around the lake area quite a bit.

I was there after the accident but had no idea there had been an accident, we were just heading up Caney.
Scott's can be dicey as noted. Small no wake zone, main channel right there and a submerged bridge that is a community hole just outside the buoys. With the spawn coming on there was a ton of traffic out there, including 2 tourneys. Both anglers were seasoned boaters and this was a freak accident. A crystal ball would have helped, but they aren't standard equipment on bass boats...
