I am the worlds worst when it comes to not wearing a life jacket and kill switch but after seeing more and more people die like this, man you've got to wear them things

Another extremely sad example of not taking boating seriously enough. I foresee a time in the not two distant future where wearing life vests and utilizing kill will become mandatory. Prayers for the family.

I am hard-wired to wear a PFD when the outboard is running, and I try to get other adult guests to do so as well.

I have always followed rules in tournaments, but have my own operating mode for other times. For many decades I have worn a Type III PFD anytime the outboard is running. That PFD typically stayed clipped to the kill switch for the entire time on the water. That way, when I put it on, I was set. I had a couple other Type III PFD vests sizes available, and almost always succeeded in getting my guest for the day to wear it when the outboard was running.

I operate a bit differently now. Today I use a Type II inflatable PFD because of the extra rollover performance vs. the Type III PFD. I also wear the new vest almost constantly due to increased medical risks. This requires that I clip/unclip the kill switch, but that is quick and easy since the vest stays on. I wouldn't dream of running a boat without the PFD & kill switch.

It also said the passenger wasnt wearing one either. In my boat you will wear one when big engine is running or you wont step foot in my boat dont want that on my mind.
