Eight 1.5's or one 8 pound bass? - 01/23/16 10:25 PM

Saw this asked on a TV show this morning. Which would you prefer? I would go with the eight 1.5's myself.

1 8. I can catch 8 little ones virtually every trip. If it's under 3 I don't even want it to bite.

Wow, that's hilarious! Most folks would have to quit fishing with that attitude! Most bass caught are under 3 lbs...lol.

Quality over quantity anytime. WHO remembers that 1.5 they caught in full detail 10 years later

. . .and that's exactly why I don't want them to bite, been there done that. Sure catching any fish is better than none. But I've changed gears in the last few years and most of my fishing is done to catch BIG fish, not numbers. At the end of the day, catching 2 or 3 small fish is no better than zeroing for me. It's fine if your satisfied with catching small fish all day, I'm not, and neither are many of the guys on here.

I want that big one.

1.5 pounders are very common, 8 pounders are rather rare. 8 pounder all the way. I start shaking when I reel in 8+ pound bass.

And that's fine, but I fish for fun and relaxation. And I'll keep five of those 1.5 to take home and eat.

I was watching Fisherman's Handbook today and Kriet asked that same question to Middleton and they chose more catches over 1 big catch. Maybe my thinking is flawed. I'll change it as soon as I catch an 8lber.

Yea, I get it, this year I'm considering focusing more on deep water structure fishing expecting to catch less but hopefully bigger ones. I catch a lot of small bass on the local river fun fishing but I've also caught several huge bass on East Texas lakes over the years. After you catch a few giants, it's a great feeling but I still like just getting bit.

I will take whatever the Good Lord blesses me with that day. First and foremost I will thank HIM for allowing me to be out there and then whatever I catch after that is a plus.

Caught two 9 lbers in 30 minutes one night on Pool. It was fun and memorable but I'd rather catch eight 1lbers than one 8 any day. I'm there to catch not cast. This Summer, I had the most fun ever on Pool catching the little ones. Didn't catch any ocer 2lbs but I'll remember all those days for a long time

I'll take one 8 pounder over 8 little guys.

But, I love those days where you catch 30-60 little dudes, so I would take a high quantity day over an 8 pounder for sure.

Both.

WTH? This is Texas Fishing Forum. Not Texas "you're a dipstick" if you can't catch 'em my way.

To the guy that said he's after the toad. 2-3 smaller fish = failure? Dropped on yer head at birth!?

8lb or bust? LMAO. BUST, 99.9% of the time.

Just go fishing and take what SHE gives you. Happiness comes much easier that way.

That was my plan last year. Learned to drop Shot, Carlonia Rig, and Flutter Spoon... Guess what, rain killed my bite!

Eight 1.5 pounders for sure. I hate fishing all day and getting one bite. It would have to be a DD before that would get my vote. I'll take the 8 bites otherwise.

As a bank angler, I'd say an 8 pound. Easy to catch multiple dinks. Rare to land a pig.

Re: Eight 1.5's or one 8 pound bass? - 01/26/16 05:07 AM

Eight 1.5 pounders early in the day capped off by an 8 pounder... They're all fun to catch, but the big fish is awesome to catch! When everything's said and done, I just want to catch fish with an occasional big fish to keep it interesting. Spending all my time searching for one big fish would ensure that 99.99% of the time I go home unhappy. That .01% of the time is the awesome part, but it's catching numbers that keeps me fishing even during non-peak times on the calendar.

Dinks will come, and dinks will go, but it's the big ones you'll never forget.

Re: Eight 1.5's or one 8 pound bass? - 01/26/16 05:34 PM

I ain't too proud to catch any of them. I just want to land what bites and eventually I will hit a big fish on the head and get bit. Them little ones beat not getting bit at all.

Can I catch all 8 1.5 lbers at once on one of them super duper bama rigs with like 12 hooks?
Posted By: ChuChu1

Re: Eight 1.5's or one 8 pound bass? - 01/26/16 06:58 PM

I've done both. I would rather catch 8 any day. I experienced the 1 fish day once. I look up at that fish every day. December 23, 1993. First cast on Coleto Creek. Good hit, good hook set, interesting landing. She laid eggs all over the boat while I was trying to get the hook out. Weighed her and put her in the water. She turned belly up and no gill action at all. I swam her for a good ten minutes, but she was dead. Took her home and had her mounted. Never got another hit all day.

Re: Eight 1.5's or one 8 pound bass? - 01/26/16 07:31 PM

I can't believe this is even a question to be honest. I would easily take an 8lber over 8 1.5s. Yes I like catching fish but to get the 1 true giant is something I'll always remember. I've had trips that were going terrible and then all the sudden I catch a 5lber and I always say that made my trip. I'm also from Minnesota so I would take still take 1 4 or 5lber over 8 1.5lbers anyday.
Posted By: JohnButte

Re: Eight 1.5's or one 8 pound bass? - 01/26/16 08:48 PM

8 ain't a true giant. A better question would be, 13 5 lbers or 1 13 lber.
