Wacky Rig Hooks? - 12/11/15 02:23 PM

Have not found a hook I'm crazy about for wacky rigged Senko's. What works for y'all? Thanks, 361v.

Use the lake fork senko rig or just a octopus hook then put a small zip to in the middle of the senko and hook it around the zip tie.... I know the way it sounds it might cause hook ups to suffer but I've never had a problem, usually always hooked right in the top of the mouth

1/0 are the best, you'll hang up in rocks a lot less with these.

I like the Owner Mosquito hooks in #1 or #1/0. I also use the same ones for drop shot. If I'm some nasty stuff I'll use the VMC #1 or1/0 wacky weedless hooks.

Gamakatsu Finesse Wide Gap Weedless. These have been pretty solid everytime I've used them. The weed guard works great. Also if your trying to make your senko last a little longer, they make a "wacky tool" which helps put an O ring in the center of your senko.

CHT Double Wacky Hook

These are the bomb! Plain and simple! I've used a lot of different wacky hoooks (Trokar, Gamakatsu, Decoy, Owner, Mustad, VMC, etc..) but these are far superior! The double hook really increases your hookup ratio. And that's crucial because a lot of times the bite is very light on a wacky rig. You can choose between a weedless or non-weedless as well. The weedguard is a quality one too, it's held up nicely to numerous fish. I also don't get hung up more than other hooks even though it's a double hook. A lot of times a company has a great general concept but the actual product is lacking quality or there is a design flaw. Not these. Everything about them is perfect and they work!

Daiichi D48Z CATCH AND RELEASE circle hook.

Do not underestimate this hook. The fish can not throw it. I have been using them for years.

Re: Wacky Rig Hooks? - 12/11/15 04:00 PM

I personally prefer the circle style weedless hooks, either the gamakatsu with the black plastic weed guard or the vmc with the metal wire guard size#2 to size#4. Advantage of using the circle style hooks is you don't have to set the hook, just put a nice bend in your rod and start reeling. Fish will hook himself, usually in the top or side of the mouth.Talk about a solid hook up. Wacky hooks being weedless is very important to me because I am alot of times fishing in the knarliest of structure and thick cover. That being said,If I don't have any of the circle style weedless hooks that I prefer, the regular weedless hooks work also just have to remember to get a good hookset.

I prefer some sort of weed guard. These worked really well for me in the timber and snot grass:

Looks like a treble hook could be used in a pinch to almost do the same thing! It's a cool idea.

I'm partial to my own weedless wacky rig with dual wire weedguards. You can adjust the weedguards for a stiffer presentation or a softer presentation by simply bending the weedguards up or down. Owner deep throat 2/0 hook included!

Re: Wacky Rig Hooks? - 12/11/15 08:24 PM

The simple Gamakatsu worm hook with a weed guard is the best I have found.
very simple,,,, straight shank, various sizes, excellent weed guard for throwing in heavy weeds.
weightless or add different size clam weights for various density weeds and rates of fall.

Re: Wacky Rig Hooks? - 12/12/15 12:37 AM

I make my own weedless hooks for wacky Senkos. I add a weedguard using braided stainless steel leader (Malin) and attach it with 1/8" electrical heat shrink tubing. The hook I use is a 4/0 Gammy Octopus hook.
That hook can handle big bass in heavy cover unlike the wimpy worm hooks with a weedguard.

I put a piece of 3/8" heat shrink tubing on the Senko for durability:

When you get tired of lossing fish on all those circle hooks, and other whacky hooks try these, my favorite: http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Falcon_Lu...ge-FALUNWT.html

Re: Wacky Rig Hooks? - 12/12/15 01:36 PM

On a related note, people often ask or wonder why circle hooks are typically used for the wacky rig.

There are several good reasons for using a circle hook, but in my mind, I think they excell due to their compact profile. With a wacky rig, you basically have your hook entirely exposed. A smaller profile hook will (hopefully) have a better chance of steering clear of any snags. Additionally, a smaller hook is more difficult for the fish to see (this tends to be a controversial topic, but in clear water I think most anglers will agree that it is an important thing to consider).

For the record, I too use the Gamakatsu Finesse Wide Gap hooks.

Re: Wacky Rig Hooks? - 12/12/15 03:32 PM

I personally love these Gamakatsu Wicked Wacky Hook's. Yo can set the hook hard just like a weightless senko rig and never worry about breaking it. It's sharp as heck, i've caught gars thru the bottom of their mouth with this.

expensive, but worth it for me.

Another reason to use circle hooks for wacky style fishing is because the bite is often undetected and they just move off with the bait and you oftentimes do not know they are on. With a circle style hook the fish will then hook themselves and you will not need to SET THE HOOK. This works very well with inexperienced new anglers or old folks LIKE ME that can't figure out what just happened and how I missed that bite when my line has moved 50 yards when I am eating my Cheese Cracker and Soda Pop!! roflmao

LOL Ron......I've missed bites too cuz of my cheese crackers, bacon biscuit, snickers, coke, ham sandwich, M&Ms, you get the idea.

I like the Gamakatsu Wicked Wacky Hook's as well......makes up for a lot of my mistakes.

Oh yea....one more safety tip....garlic spray DOES NOT taste like garlic...don't ask please!
