I don't think it is a visual thing for the bass either but the line you choose does (at times) determine the number of bites you get. I have seen that quite a bit at Fork if you are throwing braid vs mono or fluoro. I only use braid for throwing top water frogs in thick grass and pads and on a spinning reel (mainly because I hate the line twist you get with a spinning reel using mono or fluoro).
Red does not disappear, it changes color. I have caught bass on a red shad colored worm in deep water many times. They can see green very well also, why do you think a watermelon worm or green pumpkin worm works so well.
