Rayburn Wed 10/28 - 10/31/15 06:24 PM

Dad and I headed to Rayburn Wednesday planning to fish the afternoon and the following morning. 5 minutes into fishing I get a call from work letting me know I will not be fishing the following morning. I work for an oil service company and with work as slow as it's been this is not horrible news! We continue searching for our first bite trying to dodge 20mph wind. Just a couple weeks ago we had been doing well shallow in the area so that was the game plan out of the box. After about an hour and a half of chunking chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, swim jigs and Texas rigged worms without a bite we started considering plan B. Plan B which there was no plan B ended up being idling around looking for bait and cover. Didn't take me long to realize that the bait which had been shallow had moved out and was just loaded everywhere along this particular creek channel from 10-18ft. We stopped and through worms and a shad colored deep diver for about 30 minutes with no bites. I knew that with this much bait in the area there just had to be a lot of bass close so I decided to spend some more time looking for cover. Looking, looking, and finally a laydown with some branches that extended up about about 6' off bottom and appeared to be holding some bass (not that I'm ever sure what a bass is on my graph). I drop a marker bouy on both ends of the target area and back off and tie on some different baits. I start by bouncing a deep diving fat free shad(shad colored chart back). I'm hitting the cover and I honestly can't believe I'm not getting bit. I chunk a swing football head with an Ol'monster and nothing. I'm not giving up on the crankbait so I tie a Chart Shad deep diver on and give it a try. Boom 5#er and for the next hour and a half we stay on them pretty good. My dad who is brain injured and wouldn't remember any of this the following morning had the time of his life. He was throwing a 6xd and cast about half the distance was getting more bites than me so I put on a medium diver and started getting more bites. Ended up catching my first double but watching my dad have such a good time was my trophy. Also very satisfying to have one small victory against the Largmouth after getting spanked in the first half. Here are some pics. Also I practice catch and release but the fish you see went into my brothers tank at his new property.

Small world! The sunsets have been great every evening I've been over there this fall. Should have stopped and said hello.

Re: Rayburn Wed 10/28 - 11/06/15 11:39 AM

I know where you guys are coming from. I do treasure each day I get to spend with him. We almost lost him to a car accident in 2002. After 10 days in a coma, 2 years of rehab and thousands of prayers later we still have him here with us. He might not be able to do many things on his own but he is still the same companionate, God fearing example that his family would be lost without.
