Smoke shad is what I throw most, but have caught plenty on Alewife, Bone, and Japanese shad. I think I have every color but two, they all work great.

Being human, I can distinguish colors.
If I was underwater with a mask on, looking up into the sky, I think the only thing I could see was a dark silhouette against a lighter background.
Combine that with the fact that most colors are on the top of a topwater, I'm not sure that a particular color would stand out against any other.

Studies and underwater photos have shown that the water surface acts as a reflective mirror when looking up from down below. Therefore, since the body of the popper is angled down subsurface, it's color is visible in the reflection of the surface. Pretty neat concept actually, and also why topwater coler is relavent.

with all these colors being promoted by different fishermen doesn't it prove that bass will hit just about any color thrown out there provided it mimicks a bait fish and especially a wounded bait fish ?

I think so, the smoke shad I throw has more than half the paint missing. It looks half bone half smoke shad, and catches the dickens out of them.

Well, yes, they will. BUT.....Bream colors do work better for me in post spawn when fish are guarding a nest or fry, shad colors in summer and fall, when bass are on a heavy shad feed. And I prefer a black bait at night or in heavy cloud cover.

This is what has worked for me.

Obviously some baits work better than others at specific times of the year & when you can figure that out & figure out where the fish ARE HANGING OUT at that specific time of the year,,,,,,,then you truly become a fish catcher and not just a fisherman.

This is what has worked for me.
