Bait Caster

A guy in my neighborhood offered me and a buddy a couple casting reels and bait casters. I know I sound pretty NOOBY but I may need some tips on how to use them.

Verbal without pictures would be a very difficult way to learn how to cast with said item.

You will need to get someone to demonstrate and watch you try to cast... kinda like golf. Take lessons to learn.

Youtube. Tons of videos on how to set it up and how to cast. Use a little heavier weight and don't try to cast a mile until you start to learn. What brand are they? Cheaper brands are normally harder to get adjusted and to cast without getting the reel tangled (birdsnest). Check out videos on that also as you will get them and need to know how to clear them. They can be a pain to untangle at times and will make you no want to use a baitcaster. They are worth the effort to learn though.

One thing that you can do to help from birdnesting is let out about 25 yard off the real, put a small piece of black tape on the real, set the brakes to max. Then real it back in, from there you can start casting tell you get the hang of it. When you get it down, you can let more line out (50 yards) and do it again. Keep doing it tell you get 100%, after that you can start backing off the brakes some. Practice, Practice,Practice.

Learn how to adjust the reel first and start off on the tight side.

Practice practice practice is right. I've been teaching my 11 year old son how to use one. He's struggled to say the least. But I have noticed when he isn't thinking about it he tends to load his rod correctly and he gets a nice smooth cast. When he thinks about it and tries to force the cast instead of loading the rod tip it backlashes. He tends to stop the rod suddenly and that's when it happens. So I guess you need to learn to load the rod tip and follow through (follow the bait with your rod tip until it lands). Let the rod propel the bait more than your arm.

Also, learning to cast sidearm by rolling your wrist, using momentum of the bait in a twirling motion to cast is pretty foolproof way to avoid backlashes if set up half way right plus not as tiring to me.
