Tales from Basschamps on the Red River

Tales from Basschamps on the Red River - 10/12/15 03:25 PM

We locked down first day to Pool 4 wow what a ride that was. We all know who has the fastest boat on the river now after that. And yes Chad it has a black motor. Anyway, we caught our 5 on frogs in the pads and shakey heads on the jetties. The fog delay killed our frog bite on Sunday as we only had about a 45 minute window when they would hit it in the morning for some reason. Couldnt get anything goin on the shakey and we zeroed on Sunday. Got caught out on the lock as they had changed the times and didnt tell everyone evidently. There were several of us in there that happened to. A bunch of very unhappy people sad to say. It was fun though and the weather cooperated wonderfully and we will back again next year.

Put it to you this way Fun N Sun sells them but its not a Skeeter. It was the only boat that passed my partners Puma in 5 days of running the river.

Re: Tales fron Basschamps on the Red River - 10/12/15 06:00 PM

Saturday 2 guys got thrown out of there Gambler. Each one of them flew out of the boat about 30 yards in the air. Apparently hit a wave and threw the boat sideways and out they went...

Getting out of the lock Saturday am with 60 or so boats was very very dangerous! Scared the [censored] out of me... Everyone trying to out run the other boats!

Seems like an unnecessary accident waiting to happen.

This seems to be normal though, everyone trying to be first.

How fast is his Puma? I passed every Phoenix I saw in my Cougar FTD. Only guy that passed me was in a Puma FTD with a 300 Verado.

I passed every kind of boat in the event at one point or another! I did it in my ZX20 to. Went by them like they were sitting still that maybe because they were!

I don't know how many miles of that river I covered over the week but all it netted me was 1 fish that weighed 2.55#. I knew I needed to go look at changing it up completely and it just never came together. I got 1 single bite in 2 practice days. Hey, at least we didn't win a door prize AGAIN - hahaha. Outside of us just sucking at finding and catching fish, we had a blast. I love going out there and as usual Champs puts on a great show. I would however suggest one thing....have the Horseshoe Party on Thursday night and not Saturday night. I would say 90% of the teams are there on Thursday and it would be a lot easier to attend on Thursday than after a LONG day of fishing or in our case casting.

2nd place guys were fishing out of an Xpress.., guess speed doesn't win

Re: Tales fron Basschamps on the Red River - 10/13/15 12:13 AM

I would consider an Xpress. If you put any 200 HP motor on a beer can it will fly.

Played tug of war with a small gator for my keeper as I was water skiing it over pads but i won. Fish lost half its head but survived the whole day and was alive at weigh in!

That's a story with pictures. And a good one at that.

Re: Tales fron Basschamps on the Red River - 10/13/15 03:55 AM

We won practice - had 13+ and 14+ on Wed & Thurs. Burned gas on Friday looking at stuff. Found 1 sand bar in Clarks that took about 30 minutes to get off of.

Won $500.00 playing Mississippi Stud at the Horseshoe on Friday night.

1 fish on day one, had 3 fish at 1PM on day two and decided to beat the 1 1/2 wait on the ramp and get back to Dallas.

Wish we could have figured out where our fish went with the north wind.

Boat 151 - never got passed on the river but passed a lot both days.

Up in 10 mile creek on day one and there are plenty of people that need their [censored] whipped for flying by boats on plane with in 25-30 feet

Re: Tales fron Basschamps on the Red River - 10/13/15 07:22 PM

Had a pretty good practice, felt some bites, shook some fish, we caught a few short 12", a 3lber, a 4lber, and a 5lber that wouldn't shake off. Narrowed ourselves down to 3-4 primary spots with active fish. Come Saturday missed a small bite early on primary, caught one small keeper fish and then NOTHING except a 10 lb drum. Went to secondary spots and nothing but frustration. Sucked up a lot of sand in my cooling system causing a clog. Barely made it to weigh-in, but we're able to find out parts of the river had begun turning over. Sunday, everything we tried early smelled like a latrine. Got one snapping turtle, finally at about 4pm got a short fish and got off the water early for the drive back to McKinney/Springtown. No apparent permanent damage to boat. Motor is more in need of a tune-up that it will get in 2-3 weeks (it doesn't like idling/restarts in cool air).

Re: Tales fron Basschamps on the Red River - 10/14/15 04:07 PM

Found nothing in Pool 5 Wednesday, got a speeding ticket driving down to Coushatta on Thursday, had a blowout Friday morning on the way to the ramp, but found some decent quality fish. Had 4 keepers Saturday and sat in 51st. Caught a 20lb flathead on a spinning reel first thing Sunday morning. 2 keepers in the well when we locked back up at 3:30, then caught a 15 incher and a 5 lber and finished in 19th. Had a 2 lber jump off that would have put us in the top 10, but the way they were biting I'm sure alot of guys had the same story.

Was an adventure for sure and I have to say Basschamps does an amazing job.
