I'm trying to come up with some good reference photos of local threadfin so I can try and paint some crankbaits to match. I'll make it worth while the person that posts the best picture and the one I decide to use I will provide a crankbait in the body of your choice painted as close as I can get to the picture.

Davobass looks like your going to get another package from me, if your happy with the ones you get tomorrow.

Thanks guys for helping out, I have been way to busy painting to go try and catch shad. I'll post up some pics if I can get something close to the reference picture.

Josh your baits were of a gizzard shad and that is why the iridescent pink shading was on it. Most of the shad have a very slight hint of pink and you sure don't see that offered from most tackle companies.

Lol, I bet I can fix you up with some baits when you come by my house. As soon as.you get my new bait facility built I'll be more productive and can get you more baits.

Jake, come one man! You gotta be able to identify shad species. How do you select a crankbait. Option 1- sexy shad, option 2- keep throwing sexy shad. stir

Here was the first attempt at a holographic threadfin, still needs a lot of work. Will have to try some other colors to get it right and some poor painting on my part as well. Had some good ideas on how to paint the bait, but poor execution on my part. I Will have to put a better plan together for version 2

They vary so much from lake to lake you have to just pick one you like. Here are a few:

I paint an entire line of real life patterns, sunfish, shad, temperate basses, catfish, carp, buffalos, minnows and black bass. Looking to expand this winter to include shellfish and some Yankee baitfishes (perch, and mooneyes), for those guys north of the Red River. Takes a lot of time and effort to get 'em looking like the real thing. Photofinshes are a lot quicker and easier but don't hold up as well as paint and D2T. Good luck.

Bois, you are very right about bait coloration from lake to lake. I too need to.work more on sunfish, perch, and shellfish more over the winter.

On a side note your first picture is a gizzard shad laying on my boat carpet. thumb
