August Update

Evaporation for August = 11.2 inches, which equals about 24,000 acre-feet or about 0.93 feet.

Water Released Downstream for Cities by the SRA for August = 1,455.7 acre-feet, which equals 474,341,883 gallons or about 0.057 feet.

Water Pumped by Dallas Water Utilities (DWU) for August = 6,948.1 acre-feet or 2,264,048,112 gallons for the month or about 73,033,810 million gallons per day on average. This equals about 0.28 feet of water or about 3.4 inches of water for the month.

So, evaporation was by far the major source of the lake dropping in August, but I was surprised to learn that DWU pumped as much as they did. DWU pumped about 3 times what they pumped for July.

The bottom line is the lake lost about 15 inches in August with 75% of that coming from evaporation.

Year to Date Through August

Evaporation for the Year Through August = 50.95 inches or 4.24 feet or about 115,000 acre-feet.

Water Released Downstream by the SRA for Cities = 3,278.4 acre-feet.

Water Released by the SRA Through the Flood Gates when the Lake was over Full = 94,155.5 acre-feet.

DWU Water Pumped for the Year Through August = 31,309 acre-feet.

So for the year about 244,000 acre-feet of water has left the lake through evaporation, releases and pumping, which is about 9 feet of water. Thanks to all the inflow from storm runoff earlier this year the lake is currently only 1.4 feet below full pool. The surface area of the lake is currently at 25,196 surface acres. At full pool Lake Fork is 27,690 surface acres.

Let's hope for that above average precipitation that is predicted for this winter.
