Best monofilament out there - 09/07/15 10:55 PM

I am heading to El Salto in early December with a group for 4 1/2 days. Question is what is the best momo for top water fishing?
Anything better that Big Game 20#?

The best mono on the market is McCoy's Mean Green. You have to order it online. Superior strength, castability, and low memory. I used BG for years until a former Pro Angler (and my mentor) turned me onto it. Its expensive but worth it. For bass fishing I have never had the need to go heavier than 17 with McCoys. You get 17 hung up and sometimes you have to wrap it around a cleat and break it with the trolling motor. Usually the hook will break or straighten before it breaks. LOOK OUT! scared

Trilene Big Game gets my vote

Yes. Big Game is full of additives. Original Stren has no polymers and floats the best. We use 25# on all our spooks in Mexico.

Big game sucks, hate that line now. I use copolymer silver thread, great line.

Top Water: Trilene XT 17lb. It floats really well and super strong

I use Big Game or a Pline CXX Copolymer wanting to try some the Mean Green though

Big Game is a good monofilament line but a copolymer line is better. McCoys Mean Green, P Line, CXX and Voltage are all better than Big Game.

I like P-Line CXX Copoly.

I used Trilene XT 20# for top water fishing last Dec. on El Salto. I also used 30# Fireline for rattle traps and Scrounger jigs and then I used 25# BPS Flourocarbon for the weightless flukes. I also had 65# Power Pro on another reel but never used it.

Pline CXX is good also. I would stay away from McCoys Mean Green. That stuff easily breaks like sewing thread.

Sunline Super Natural

This stuff is the absolute best! Their turnover rate is really good so you know all the line Sunline is manufacturing is going to be fresh. It's very strong, limp and it lasts longer than Big Game IMO. I've gotten bad spools of Big Game before as well. I've yet to find a reason to hate Sunline Super Natural Monofilament. I promise you won't regret buying this line.

17#-20# Trilene XT or P-Line CX/CXX

Quit using Big Game many years ago as it has too much stretch for good hook sets. Big Game was designed mostly for salt water where there is more stretch needed for big fish surges and shock resistance.

You must have gotten a bad spool of McCoys Mean Green.

For topwaters at El Salto, I'd use 20lb McCoy's Mean Green. Floats better than Big Game (more buoyant due to silicone copoly with the mono), as strong, just the right amount of stretch. Big Game is too stretchy which leads more difficult hooksets on long casts and more memory.

For big, heavy topwaters that you can cast a long distance and frogs, I'd take some 65lb braid. Almost no stretch is great for hook sets at the end of a very long casts.

Pline is copoly mono with fluoro and thus has a more neutral buoyancy, slowly, slowly sinks--great for jerkbaits, swimbaits, baits in the middle of the water column and baits on the bottom where you want the bait to stand up (Neko rig, shaky head, mushroom head, etc)

Obviously there are a lot of good lines out there and a lot of opinions on what is the best. But one thing I've learned is if you leave your reels out in the sun for extended periods of time the sun will break down the line. Keep your reels covered, upside down on the deck, and protect the line. The line will last longer for you, cast better for you, and will be stronger.

Much better! Most of those others can't compare, for spinner bait, shallow to medium crankbaits.

Whatever line you use if its on your reel longer than a month right before you fish hook it on something back up longer than you can cast and stretch hell out of it.

I've had trouble breaking big game attaching it to the TM.
