Best lure for schooling bass - 09/01/15 12:57 PM
I need a lure for making long casts into schooling bass that push shad to the top of the water and don't stay up long enough to get close to them. Which lure works best for this situation?

Zara spook or a 3/4oz trap.

Re: Best lure for schooling bass - 09/01/15 01:11 PM
You definitely need something that casts a long distance for these situations
First choice would be a rattle trap or other lipless
I like to cast it just past where the school blew up/then disappeared let it sink on semi slack line for a count of four (looks like a dying shad if you let it sink), then retrieve
Other choices that cast far and have that dying action on fall
Spoon
Wingding or other tailspinner
Bladed swim jigs
If the school blew up closer, your options increase to include squarebills, soft swim baits, swim jigs, topwaters, flukes/sluggos/etc

I would probably go with the lipless crankbait too. Also, tie on a med diver suspending crankbait. Sometimes the bigger fish are below the smaller schooling fish. Big fish can be lazy. They'll follow the schools around and take their share. I used to run a shad color suspending crankbait under the schooling fish and catch some hogs on Cypress. Every evening in the summer there was this one point where the spots would school and surface. They were fun to catch but I would often pull some nice ones out right under them by cranking and stopping a suspending crankbait.
1/4 oz. chrome blue Ratl-Trap

Paycheck Baits Repo Man You can't go wrong with the Repo Man. I like it because the weight transfer system in this bait lets it casts a mile and it just seems to walk easier than other similar baits. Not to mention they have really cool colors.

3/8 Kastmaster with a feather hook. I have a friend of mine tie a short shank No 4 with white feathers. That kastmaster matches the shad fry very well. Hit them when they are blowing and reel as soon as it hits the water keeping it high.

I love a topwater like a torpedo or a Yellow Magic when they are schooling but when reach is an issue it's hard to beat a trap or a spoon ripped through the school. Also with the spoon you can kill it and often find the larger fish under the school.

Traps are a good choice but the recent schools ive been around wont touch em..need an under spin or something more along those lines
What Gary said but I change my hooks to red !!

Try a good ol Road Runner. That might just do the trick. But not many bass anglers have the larger ones in their arsenal. They work almost as good as an H&H! LOL

This is your best option for schooling bass, the problem is finding these lures.
Add a flee-fly jig on a 18" leader and double the fun.

This +1
Use the new 3/8oz Randy Runner with a trailer that matches what they are chasing in color and size. The flash of the blade gets em' on your bait.
Great new lure. Use it all the time on schoolers in Athens.

3/4 oz jigging spoon. Throw it to them.. If they're on top when it lands start cranking it fast making it skip across the surface, If they are down, let it flutter down to them, rip it up off the bottom, them let it fall again. Repeat all the way back to the boat.

Popper. When we were at Athens a couple weeks ago it was the only thing the schools would hit. We tried many different baits and kept coming back to the Popper because that's the only lure that would get the bite. It was amazing watching the bass school all around us. We didn't know which direction to throw!

Re: Best lure for schooling bass - 09/11/15 01:19 AM
I love to catch them on a trap, but usually will tie on a structure spoon that I've switched the hook to a single. They do tend to swallow it, and the single hook makes it much faster to unhook the fish and get the spoon back out there for another one.
